Basically, what if Bush picked McCain as his running mate instead of Cheney.

Would the Republican ticket pick up any additional states, or would Gore actually flip a state and win the election?

I'd think Bush/McCain flips New Mexico, Wisconsin, Oregon, and make Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Maine's 2nd super close but they still go for Gore.

But I think it helps Gore out in Tennessee and Missouri to the point he only loses those states by 0.5-1.5% instead of 3-4%

I also think Gore wins Iowa by slightly more.

It shouldn't make a huge difference. Maybe, New Mexico could flip to Bush with McCain being from Arizona in the Southeast. McCain could also maybe flip either Oregon and/or Wisconsin, but I'd keep them for Gore. Bush would still win this election, 276 EV to 262 EV. This election would still be very close with it coming down to the state of Florida, in Bush v. Gore.

George Bush/John McCain: 276 EV
Al Gore/Joe Lieberman: 262 EV
