Senators, please vote aye, nay, or abstain on whether the Twelfth Senate shall waive the requirement to approve the Budget before considering any bill or constitutional amendment.

Voting is now open.  A two-thirds majority is required for passage.

Is there a compelling reason for this, or is this just because the senator wants to do other stuff first?

Yes, there is.  Nothing is going on in this Senate.  Time to get going.

Nay.

This budget has already been delayed by four months because of the need to dispose of the balanced budget issue. It is absolutely unacceptable that we delay yet another 4 months because Senators wish to move onto their other pet projects. It is our responsibility to consider a budget, and so we will.

Nay

We can pass the budget now and pretty quickly if we all work on it, this just takes more time doing this as well.

Senators voting Nay: how about you start proposing some action on the budget, then?

It's ridiculous to dictate that we must first work on the budget, and then not make any attempt to actually pass a budget.

Like I said, I'm happy to work with yall on the matter.  I have posted all the relevant info on the budget thread.

However, keep in mind that this is a temporary matter, the real "real" budget won't be passed until November.

Aye, but if the vote fails I don't have a problem with that either. Smiley

Alright, this motion has failed, although Senators may still change their votes.

I don't understand why people vote against this and then still do nothing on the budget.  How long does this Senate wish to remain inactive?

With the removal of the balanced budget requirement, I think this budget will get passed a little quicker since there can be a deficit.

Not that it matters, but I suppose I'll vote aye on the assurance that the budget will be (or would have been) worked on in tandem with other legislation.

It's ridiculous to dictate that we must first work on the budget, and then not make any attempt to actually pass a budget.

Then your beef should be with the Constitution, not with the Senators who are sticking up for its spirit. When we passed the 4th Amendment, I understood the 2/3ds override as an option that would be invoked to deal only with critical matters, and the text of the debate bears me out on this. We abused the clause at the beginning of the 10th Senate because it was necessary to remove the balanced budget requirement in order to get a sensible budget - there is no reason that we cannot pass a sensible budget now.
