Hours after Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington characterized Trump's recent actions as "antithetical to the teachings of Jesus", he's now also drawing flak from Catholic Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory:

Quote
President Trump drew fresh criticism from religious leaders on Tuesday when he and first lady Melania Trump visited a shrine to Pope John Paul II in Washington, D.C.

The trip to to the Saint John Paul II National Shrine drew a sharp response from Washington Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory, who said, "I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles."

...

Gregory said in a statement that John Paul II was a defender of the dignity of human beings who "certainly would not condone the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, scatter or intimidate them for a photo opportunity in front of a place of worship and peace."

Gregory is a black, you see.

It's weird to see the Catholics and Protestants united

DC tends to have fairly convivial relations between Catholics and mainliners iirc. (In some of the dioceses like Arlington that are around DC, on the other hand, the local Catholic Church is much, much Trumpier.)

Trump’s photo op looks to have rilled up folks even more in DC:

Is this even under the authority of the attorney general?

Former President George W. Bush released a lengthy statement on Tuesday calling on the country to listen to black Americans and “examine our tragic failures.”

“It is a strength when protesters, protected by responsible law enforcement, march for a better future," he wrote in a lengthy statement. "This tragedy — in a long series of similar tragedies — raises a long overdue question: How do we end systemic racism in our society?”

...

Bush called on people to listen to “grieving” African Americans, saying it was critical to seeing the country's reality honestly and improving on it. is fundamental to seeing the country honestly and improving it.

“We can only see the reality of America's need by seeing it through the eyes of the threatened, oppressed, and disenfranchised,” he wrote.

Even George W. Bush would have done a better job responding to...well...pretty much everything that has happened since this year began.

Many doubt the justice of our country, and with good reason. Black people see the repeated violation of their rights without an urgent and adequate response from American institutions. We know that lasting justice will only come by peaceful means. Looting is not liberation, and destruction is not progress. But we also know that lasting peace in our communities requires truly equal justice. The rule of law ultimately depends on the fairness and legitimacy of the legal system. And achieving justice for all is the duty of all.

You could say the same of Ted Cruz. And Marco Rubio. And John Kasich. And Ben Carson. And Jeb! And Chris Christie. I literally cannot think of anyone who is worse suited to this moment than Donald Trump.

Too bad that its president is a f***ing imbecile whose response to the current situation amounts to tear-gassing churches because "you gotta dominate".

HOLY COW

That's quite a contrast to the reactions of the country in the wake of civil rights protests and riots in the late 1960s.  We've come a long way indeed over the past fifty years....

I think Tom Cotton has shown himself to be as bad or worse than Trump.

Update: Trumpist propaganda organ Catholic advocacy group "Catholic Vote" has released a statement accusing Archbishop Gregory of launching a partisan attack on muh great and glorious New Constantine Equal-to-the-Apostles True Blue Christian President.

Is it just me or does it not appear that the total amount of protesters on the streets today in many cities (Boston, NYC, LA, DC, etc) significantly larger than they were the past few days?

I think that is true. Over the weekend and even yesterday when the narrative was "race riots," a lot of normies didn't want to be associated with it, especially in the middle of a pandemic. Now the narrative seems to have shifted to "last one to the revolution is a rotten egg" which, for better or for worse, is a lot better motivator.

Self-proclaimed "allies" who think that they will be spared from the mob because they're on the "right side" are mistaken:

Americans want to show that they're not going to be pushed around by evil men like Donnie Boy and Billie Boy. You gotta love to see it.

Well I just got back from a small protest in Allen, TX a small heavily Republican suburb north of Dallas. There was maybe about 300 people there for the March, and then perhaps 75-100 still protesting on the main intersection outside city hall and the Police Department by the time I left maybe 5 hours later. I can proudly say for every negative response (including one redneck who shouted at us to “stop killing cops”, wtf?) there were easily 40-50 positive responses with people honking, cheering us on, hanging their own signs outside their car, etc.

Sweet moment when cops (who were very civil and calm) let two little boys, one black and one white, jump in their car and showed them how the lights, and sirens, and everything worked. They were ecstatic.

Good day.
