If Biden wasn't Vice President he probably was going to be Secretary of State in an Obama cabinet, as he seemed to want that job.

If he'd remained in the Senate, he might gotten at least some support in succeeding Harry Reid Majority/Minority Leader (despite not actually being in Leadership), or he might have run for President in 2020 anyways (and while he'd do worse with African American voters, he wouldn't do as poorly with them as he did in 2008, unless Booker/Harris catch some other unknown candidate catches fire with that voting bloc.)

No way Biden would have run in either 2016 or 2020. If Biden for some reason did run in 2020, he would have done very poor in the primary. The question now is who would be Obama's VP? Obama's VP, maybe Evan Bayh could have eventually became President in either 2016 or 2020.

If he didn't pick Biden... I wonder if he would have actually offered Hillary the VP slot?

According to Game Change, he kept bringing her name up when discussing candidates.
