Yes, it's fine to split Hawthorne. It's not fine to split Malibu, Santa Clarita, Santa Monica, or Huntington Park.

Finished my map: https://davesredistricting.org/join/5180a8ee-d24e-48b4-8e6f-83d0f5a041d9

Recommendations welcome, I know that the 10th is ugly, mostly because it was my leftover seat, also the Inland Empire mess is to try to draw more minority access seats.

How do we have a district that connects a northern Sacramento suburb to San Bernandino.

The 4th is an abomination that should be destroyed in it's entirety, the 13th should drop Half Moon Bay, the 3rd should go all the way to Del Norte County, the 32nd should drop either Long Beach or Venice/Mar Vista, the 26th needs to drop Claremont and Glendora, and the 35th, 41st, 46th, and 48th should be drawn over again from scratch. You don't need to do these insane pairings to get sufficient minority access.

The old 4th had to be cut, because of geography issues, so that is what resulted as the main eastern seat

do you have any recommendations about better pairings for those specific seats (35, 41, 46, 48)?

I have lots, but everything is contingent on what happens elsewhere in the state and some of it requires value judgements on your part. As a starting point, I would draw a district that includes all of Imperial County and all of Riverside County east of Banning. That's a perfect district--no need for any San Diego/Imperial cuts or Riverside/San Bernardino cuts (outside of the core Inland Empire itself). Second, any district which attaches parts of Orange County to Temecula/Murrieta is unacceptable. Fixing those two things will give you enough cleaning up to do elsewhere before we check in again.

PS: please post screenshots instead of links so we can view complete maps and their changes over time.

I'll add to this, that there is even some illegal stuff going on. I'm not even sure 19 is fully connected by a year round road, and I know 32 isn't over the LA harbor.

I'm not a big fan of these scores DRA added, especially since they can can swing wildly, but that compactness score basically explains why everyone is finding faults.

Also, I just realized you have no AA VRA district, which is not going to work. You either need two in South LA that are around 40% AA or one in the same area that's over 50% AA in any semi-acceptable map.

I didn't think the Los Angeles AA seats were VRA seats, just access seats.

And you can't hit duel 40's unless some cities are cut unnecessarily elsewhere or Downtown is added to the grouping. High 30s is far more manageable.

Fair enough, although something like 41% and 38% isn't that hard. Also, it isn't that hard to draw a majority AA CVAP seat in LA so it could be argued that there should be an AA VRA seat in California.

Yeah, if 30 pages of discussion has told us anything, it's that the ethnic districts in LA are going to be a point of contention when the commission actually starts holding hearings. Whether the AA seats are condensed into one or preserved as two access seats is one of those points. I wouldn't be surprised if we start hearing "more equal than others" style arguments over who gets access and who gets the short straw.

An AA seat didn't get eliminated in 2002, the Republican Long Beach seat got eliminated.

Yeah it was held by Steve Horn throughout the 1990s.

Did it cover Garden Grove? If so, I lived in that district.

This is a hideous gerrymander. The 4th, 7th, 9th, 35th, 41st, 46th and 48th are all abominations.

Actually it was Long Beach to Downey. The one you're thinking of was Dana Rohrabacher, who Steve Horn once ran in a primary against

Speaking of Rohrabacher, why does CA-48 contain both Laguna Beach (Harley Rouda's hometown) and Garden Grove?

SERIOUS TIME

Tomorrow we learn if any region or minority group is going to be over-represented. Under-representation we be corrected for via the subsequent group selections. Its down to random selection now.

We can expect a commissioner to act fairly, or at least be constrained by the bureaucratic tape surrounding this process. However, everyone deep down has some NIMBYism, and will favor their personally visualized COI and cut others.

After the DRA update my map files got corrupted. I'm working on a new map. I have all but one SD seat, Imperial-Riverside, the OC and LA Asian seats, and the OC and SGV Hispanic seats. Any ideas on what I should do next?
