As Mayor of a city with many complicated racial and religious relationships, and a huge Jewish community, de Blasio has shown massive and dangerous ignorance. I'm not asking him to recognize every Hasidic sect, but he should know the basic differences between Jews.
I know that the Hasidic, Haredi community has many sects disregarding the rules. I know that because about half of Israel's Coronavirus pandemic is them. But de Blasio here is addressing the entire Jewish community and, while I know he's not an anti-semite, he's definitely doing their job for them.

I’ll wager the very large nonobservant, Reform, Conservative, and even Modern Orthodox communities in New York know he’s not speaking to them.

Whether he's speaking to them or not, the people who will hear this are the mob of antisemitic attackers who made the city an extremely dangerous place for observant Jews.

I'm paralyzed with indecision about how to react to this. On the one hand, I hate De Blasio and all politicians like him who gleefully enforce stay-at-home orders just to feel powerful. On the other hand, I have zero patience for religious groups that risk creating new outbreaks just so they can get together and worship, and play identity politics games when they're called out.

It's really all about context. Yes, the conduct of many ultra-religious hasidic sects is causing a massive problem. But NYC has been a hotbed for a wave of antisemitism in the last year, with hundreds of attacks that escalated into two fatal terror attacks in surrounding areas. De Blasio essentially gave license for that to heat up again, and his language made sure it would be spread out across all visible Jews.

When the government decides that a specific ethnic group is to be held under a harsher lockdown and legal standard, that group is inevitably going to resist.

The only way to get the trust of the community and show that he's taking their safety and their concerns seriously is by using his powers to remove De Blasio. The community can't be expected to answer to him after his repulsive actions in April and beyond. Cuomo should take charge of controlling this outbreak personally after ensuring that the Jewish community never has to be threatened by this tin-pot dictator again.

All of the spikes in cases we've seen here in the city recently have been in heavily Hasidic areas. None of them wear masks. It's not about religion whatsoever, it's about putting the rest of NYC at risk at this critical time.

A few years ago the ADL said there'd been an 80% annual increase in antisemitic hate crimes. Turns out all of this was because of some crazy Israeli kid calling in bomb threats to countless Jewish community centers, in order to scare people into immigrating to Israel. The ADL would cease to exist if antisemitism in America were accurately reported. As a Jewish man I am no more at risk in the United States than an Italian or Irish man.

If the NAACP reported every time a black person was called a slur on the road by some random racist, their database would be 100 times bigger than the ADL's. But black, latino and Muslim Americans aren't privileged enough to have an organization like the ADL that takes note of every single time they feel slighted, they're too busy trying to duck crooked cops and ICE.
