As Mayor of a city with many complicated racial and religious relationships, and a huge Jewish community, de Blasio has shown massive and dangerous ignorance. I'm not asking him to recognize every Hasidic sect, but he should know the basic differences between Jews.
I know that the Hasidic, Haredi community has many sects disregarding the rules. I know that because about half of Israel's Coronavirus pandemic is them. But de Blasio here is addressing the entire Jewish community and, while I know he's not an anti-semite, he's definitely doing their job for them.

I’ll wager the very large nonobservant, Reform, Conservative, and even Modern Orthodox communities in New York know he’s not speaking to them.

Whether he's speaking to them or not, the people who will hear this are the mob of antisemitic attackers who made the city an extremely dangerous place for observant Jews.

Blaming Jews for pandemics has gotten thousands of us killed over the years.

Any hackers out there want to check how many e-mails De Blasio has received from UK Labour accounts in the last few years?

TBF if the GOP said this about any minority group we know how atlas would react, Goldfield does have a few points here.

Yeah, this was a very very poor way to state what I assume he meant (that the Hasidic community needs to not congregate in large groups which they have evidently continued to do despite the ban, and that this isn't something meant to specifically target Hasidic Jews as it applies to everyone in the city and this is a matter of life and death for everyone, and that the NYPD will take action to break up such groups.)

The way I see it calling out a whole ethnic group (as opposed to the specific organization/group doing something "bad") is the issue. It would be like a politician telling all African-Americans they to work to stop an outbreak of gang violence or saying all Italian-Americans need to work to stop a Mafia War. Of course that would piss off members of an ethnic group/race/religion that aren't involved with whatever is being addressed, whether it be gang violence or congregating in large groups during a pandemic.

What De Blasio said was factual, he was referring to the Haredi community where the disease has been spreading rapidly. This is a result of them CONSTANTLY bending rules whenever they see fit whether it’s campaigning against closing yeshivas or attending group prayers or hosting crowded funerals.

I get why he’s frustrated with the Hasidic communities and he’s very much in the right to be but he (or whoever it is on his staff that runs his social media) should have worded this better.

This was dumb wording, but the Hasidim deserve to be called out for so many things from endangering innocent lives by ignoring coronavirus regulations to the fact that many of NY's Hasidic communities regularly work to cover up the crimes of Hasidic child molesters.

It wasn't antisemitic but as mayor of new York of all places he should've known how the usual suspects would react.

The hasidim deserve to be called out and then some. This was bad phrasing and DeBlasio shows once again he has terrible political instincts.

Politicians should really stop personally using Twitter. Make fun of Biden all you want, but having a team running your twitter basically prevents stupidity like this.

My grandfather like many his age landed ashore at Normandy to fight for freedom,  only for their kids generation to use the flu to eat away at those fundamental rights.

I don't believe DeBlasio hates Jews in general.  I believe he hates the Hasidic Jewish community.  And for the best of reasons; they are DINOs politically, and don't support him.  Indeed, they generally vote Democratic in state and national elections; the Democrats they DO vote for are generally DINOs like Dov Hikind, who are basically Republicans with a D in front of their name.  (They're the opposite of Badger, who finally became congruent with his own Avatar, lol.)

DeBlasio probably regrets saying "Jewish", but the Hasidim are folks DeBlasio feels free to dump on.  They're his version of the Religious Right.

You don’t think the 2,500 people attending a funeral had something to do with his Tweet?

I'm sure it had something.

If it were a massive outpouring by the African American community or the Hispanic community over a prominent death, he'd rhetorically tap dance around the issue, lest he offend a mass constituency.  New York is all about Group Politics.

If, God forbid, there was a Hate Crime committed against one of NYC's Chinese Community in Chinatown and there were a large spontaneous gathering over the issue, DeBlasio would be seeking to capitalize politically.  New York politics has always been a combination of Pandering and Virtue Signaling, together with Tough Guy posturing when expedient.  DeBlasio's a purely political animal.  In that respect, he's not unlike most of NY's pols.

DeBlasio's tweet is wrong, but funerals of thousands of people are much worse. This is the middle of a pandemic, where every mass gathering is an opportunity for the disease to spread and claim more lives. People need to stop being idiots and just social distance until a safe way out of lockdown is found (ideally a federal South Korean testing and tracing system is ramped up quickly to manage new outbreaks, and then a vaccine arrives asap).

It's easy to tweet a hostile tweet against a mass constituency that's irrevocably opposed to you.

Oh yeah I'm not excusing DeBlasio's tweet, the best case is he's an idiot and the worst case is pretty bad. But his tweet didn't kill anyone, mass gatherings right now do kill people.

The problem is he's playing on a well known and long-standing stereotype of the Jews being disease spreaders, one that goes back to the plague where they were treated as the scapegoat. There is no excuse short of playing to antisemitism for his remarks.

He's not "playing on it," he's unfortunately trying to manage a situation where Hasidic Jews, as a community, are repeatedly taking actions that trigger the stereotype without consideration for the negative consequences to people's health.

Truth is an absolutely defense against charges of slander or libel.

I'm sure it had something.

I'm glad we're in agreement why DeBlasio felt he needed to communicate to the Jewish community of New York in particular in his tweet.
