LGBTQ children’s books face record calls for bans in US libraries
Quote
Attempts to remove books from libraries across the US rose almost a fifth last year, with children’s books featuring LGBTQ characters making up 80% of the most challenged books.

...

They pointed out that, in the five years before 2015, the year same-sex marriage was legalised across the US, LGBTQ books never made up more than 20% of ALA’s top 10. Since 2015, they have accounted for at least 40% of the list. This year, the proportion is 80%.

“When LGBTQ stories are silenced in this way, LGBTQ youth and children from LGBTQ families get the message that their own stories – their very lives – do not have value, that they are shameful,” their statement read...

How is this a war on homosexuality? How about this isn't a subject parents should need to discuss with their kids until they reach a certain age?

Are these some new type of libraries that force you to checkout books you don't want to read?

Would you be okay if a library stocked anime porn in the children's section?

Why not just let the parent make the choice?

That's fine for buying books, but that's not how a typical library visit with your kid goes. Parent and child go together to the children's section, and if they stay to read, it's likely the kid will just pick up something to read themselves at some point. (obviously depends on age, but let's assume primary school age) Also, keep in mind that kids don't just read picture books, and you can't tell the contents of a book just by looking at the cover.

At what age is it appropriate for my nieces to know that their uncles are gay?

Ma’am, this comparison is bunk and you know it.

The books in question are not pornographic in any way, they just depict character that aren’t hetero cisgender folks. Censoring kids from reading these books are keeping them away from reality, that some of the people that they know or their own selves are gay.

Of course, children should know their family. If the books said something to the extent of "some men are married to women, some men are married to men, some women are married to women", I would have no problem with that.

Ma’am, this comparison is bunk and you know it.

It'd probably help in the article in the OP differentiated between public schools by grade level. The list of most banned books includes the Handmaidens Tale, which I have no objection to being in a high school library and probably even a middle school library, but yeah why is a book on rape slavery available to 2nd graders ... and it may not be. That's the problem with the article in the OP, that there is little context. The Prince and the Knight or Billy has 2 Mommies seems harmless enough to have in an elementary school library; context is a little different though if a teacher assigns it as mandatory reading ... again we dont know the context of any of the challenges to the books. Im generally against banning books from public school libraries, but I mean clearly age and context matters. Wiki lists that one of the most banned books from public schools is called "The new joys of gay sex" which I totally dont think should be in a public school library, and feel similarly about the Kama Sutra and other hetero sex books. More context please.

I haven't read A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo because I'm not a little kid and don't have any little kids, but I'm pretty sure "a picture book by John Oliver about a gay rabbit" is pretty much exactly that.

You can't just silence us. I represent a growing movement in this country. If the mods are really "nonpartisan", they should stop deleting posts like mine.

It has nothing to do with partisanship and everything to do with common decency, particularly on a forum where >30% - 40% of users identify as LGBT.

You're the only one trying to turn this into some muh partisan mods issue, probably so you have some reason to justify your complaining other than that you dislike gay people.

Were the Romans apes? The ancient Greeks? Basically every civilized society before the 20th century?

The Greeks and Romans are probably not going to be the civilizations of choice for somebody concerned about exposing children to homosexuality.

Title is misleading as a decent number of complaints are anti-trans and not anti-gay. This is just another example of why "LGBT" is a bad way of referring to people, as it others not only the gay community but the trans community as well.

Very few still care that my hypothetical kid would have two fathers but a lot of people would care if I started changing his gender when he was six. I mean, I'm never having children but anyone with half a brain sees the two have nothing to do with the other.

Common decency? Explain to me how it is common decency to shove this in the faces of children? This isn't the first time you and the other mods have censored me for stating mainstream opinions. They may not be mainstream on this forum, but they are in real life.

I don't dislike gay people, but I fundamentally oppose shoving sexual content in the minds of children. Is that too mean for you?

How is a book about a bunny rabbit with a bunny boyfriend sexual content? I refuse to believe you are that much of an idiot.

Forgive me for not believing a word you say when you use the wording you did in your now-deleted posts. As someone who is also LGBT, I have a lifetime full of dealing with people who promise they don't hate us, but then talk trash about us behind our backs, exclude us, judge us, and discriminate in others forms (such as businesses). So when you say "I don't...", it really doesn't matter. Maybe you even believe that, but your actions speak differently.

All it means to me is that you don't even know yourself. Or are outright lying to cover yourself.

It is sexual because the whole point of it is pushing a narrative of "same-sex relationships are cool and fun" onto children. It's not the content itself, but the agenda that comes with it.

Do you see same-sex relationships as (ceteris paribus) "more sexual" than opposite-sex relationships? If so, why?
