The Haredim always manage to sneak into these governments. Ugh.

Tbh? We had a "thin" government without the Haredim in 2013 and nothing really changed. If we want secular reforms, we need to get the religious zionists out just as much as the Haredim. And if we want good government, we need to get Likud out of power.

Honestly, the pace snd scale of secularization in Israel is so dramatic that it doesn't really matter what the government does. Society is running laps around government and the Haredi foot-dragging can br viewed as a desperate attempt to slow things down. The reality is that even Haredi society is moving faster than government, so the Haredi political game is something of a joke.

How so?

Well they do say that religious couples give birth to more secular babies than secular couples do.

So...

- Labor party central committee okays their entry into the coalition
- Meretz MKs are calling them sellouts, telling left-wing activists to join them instead
- Mairav Michaeli accuses Peretz of stealing votes, saying she's gonna see what the Supreme Court decides before making her next step

The fact that about 1/3rd of the party convention voted against joining government shows that there are some people who will respond to that call from the left. I can definitely see them failing to cross the threshold next time, at this rate. I think it will be a double squeeze, too, as more moderate Labor voters could migrate to Yesh Atid thanks to continued opposition to Netanyahu, but Meretz is the much greater threat.

One poll had them at 1.1%. Below Gesher, Drek Israel (Hendel and Hauser) and Otzma. Labour is dead.

Yikes... those are Tulsi Gabbard numbers

If Ya’alon or anyone from Yesh Atid or the Joint List refuses to back Gantz in opposition to Bibi out of indignation then they deserve to go too tbh. While Gantz is definitely unfit to run, the only reason you’d think of doing something like that is if you thought Gantz is just as bad or worse than Bibi, which is a questionable stance in itself.

I found this in a discord I'm in.

Haha, I love it. I’m between the Zehutnik and the Arab Worker.

There were definitely a few missed opportunities though (Ale Yarok supporters, Ayelet Shaked fanboys, old Russians, Haneen Zoabi etc.)

https://www.ynetnews.com/article/HyV1LHeqI

According to the poll, only a quarter of the respondents (26%) said they support the potential annexation, while 40% prefer a permanent two-state solution, 22% favor unilateral disengagement from the Palestinians, while only 13% are content with the current situation.

Although the pledge to annex the strategic parts of the West Bank was one of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's major election campaign points, only a third (36%) of his Likud party's supporters said they back the initiative.

The survey also shows that most Jewish citizens, including most Likud voters, do not support the annexation of the Jordan Valley if the move would put a strain on relations with Jordan.

Yamina going to the opposition claiming they want to create a right wing opposition to this left government. It might have been perceived as sincere had we not known that Yamina would have happily got in with 1-2 more ministerial positions.

Bennett and Shaked preparing to stick the knife in, maybe?

Yamina spokesmen are going on a rant about how they’re gonna take down Netanyahu.

TBH, I totally didn’t see this one coming.

Confidence vote postponed to Sunday. Not sure how much of it is genuine Likud pressure and how much of it is a tactic by Bibi to squeeze more out of Gantz. Anyhow this doesn't look good for Likud as their base is suffering economically they are all busy with minister posts and respect.

I mean it's been clear as day Likud MKs really don't give a sh*t about anyone else but themselves for a while now. I don't see why this would change their voters minds.

The Israeli 35th Government:

as it's a duumiverate the government is split into 2 blocs

Likud Bloc:
PM - Herr Netanyahu
Finance - Israel Katz
Home Office - Deri'i (Shas)
Education - Galant
Interior Security - Ohana
Transportation - Regev
Health - Edelstein
Housing - Litzman (UTJ)
Environmental Protection - Gamliel
Energy - Steinitz
Higher Education and Water Resources - Elkin (not sure what this means yet)
Community Enhancement - Orly Levy (Gesher Judas)
Religious Services - Avitan (Shas)
Jerusalem - Rafi Peretz (Jewish Home)
Linking the Government and the House - Amsalem (basically has control of some government agencies and nothing to do with the title)
Intelligence Services - Eli Cohen (empty office)
International Cooperation - Akunis (after Ardan sods off to the US)
Settlement - Hotovli

Gantz Block
Alternate PM and Defence - Gantz
Foreign Office - Ashkenazi
Justice - Nissenkorn
Economy - Peretz (Labour)
Welfare - Shmoli (Labour)
Communication - Hendel (Derech Eretz)
Culture and Sport - Trooper
Strategic Affairs - Farkash Cohen
Agriculture - Shooster
Immigration - Tamano Shato
Social Equality - Merav Cohen
Diaspora - Yankelevetic
Tourism - Zamir
Science - Shai
Under-Minister in Defence for civil matters - Bitton

Speaker of the House - Yariv Levin
Coalition Whip - Zohar

Notable outs: Hanegbi, Dichter, Barkat (the last 2 are massive turds so good). I think some resentment within the backbenches will grow

As I said the worst of all worlds, Hawkish and economic populism

Big government ery.

I guess it's finally sinking in that he made a deal with the devil and it's not with it. Sucks for him.

Hopefully he loses his own seat after this bullsh*t.

Yair Lapid did a Q&A with Tablet Mag, can be found here: https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/israel-middle-east/articles/yair-lapid-interview-may-2020

Looks like he’s gonna continue to promote Yesh Atid as a centrist liberal party a la En Marche or the Liberal Democrats as opposed to trying to become the party of the center-left as I predicted. Ah well.

Also, there was another poll this week (I know they’re super unreliable across the board lately) that put The Joint List at 15 seats, Yesh Atid at 14 and B&W at 12. Yamina got 9, Meretz and YB both got 6. Thoughts?

Apologies if this has already been said (and it probably has), but why would someone who hopes to finally become Prime Minister agree to join a rotation government when he/she doesn't get to serve during the first half of the term and can't fully trust the other side? Because depending on the political climate after the first half of the term it can be so tempting and easy for the other side to just renege on their promise by cooking up a more less plausible story as to why it is absolutely necessary to retain full power at that current point in time.

Because as we've seen Gantz just.. really isn't a very good politician.

with 61 for and 11 against the joint Likud-B&W bill for the legalization (not just decriminalization) of Cannabis passed first reading. let's wait and see if it could survive the road to the second and third reading, but a big step forward

Who voted against?

Mainly the JL I believe. They have a drug problem with the youth and some arguments about the “outsourcing” of drug crimes to them from Jews.

The haredi and parts of Yamina are against but the former did not vote.

Lapid once said he was against and I suppose Boogie might be against in principle but YA wouldn’t bring down this legislation

I mean, a good chunk of the Joint List are religious Sunnis. It’s not at all shocking lol.
