At this point, at his age, suspending his campaign means that Bernie will never be President. Whether Trump wins again, or Biden wins, Bernie is going to be 82 years old in November 2024. There will be a new generation of players up at the bat.

It's also clear he has fans who aren't going to go away, and a good chunk of them will never feel that Biden has "earned their vote." Many will stay home; Some here have indicated they'll vote third party.

So the question is: Would Bernie accept the #2 spot? Would Biden offer it?

I can only see upsides:

1) Unites the Biden and Bernie factions of the party

2) Increases Democratic voter turnout

3) You have two stars on the ticket. Even if they're both "old white men", both appeal to very different groups. It would be akin to Clinton's choosing of Gore in 1992 - runs against the conventional wisdom, but makes the ticket stronger.

4) It gives Bernie the power he wants, even if he's not the President.

5) It would make a great concession to Sanders' supporters, whose ardent and full (not half hearted) support is going to be needed to defeat Trump

People say "Biden should choose Kamala" or this or that person but I think the best and only viable choice is Bernie.

Biden/Sanders is the only ticket I can see completely guaranteeing the Democrats victory.

I think he probably would although there is no chance of Biden offering it, he's already committed to selecting a woman.

There are other, younger and more diverse choices than a second old, white man on the ticket.

While picking Bernie unites the Democratic factions better than any other choice, it also has several downsides.
1. It's a total flip flop that cannot be taken back after he pledged to pick a woman

2. It means two *old ass* straight white guys are at the top of the ticket which looks hypocritical for    the "party of diversity and inclusion"

3. It completely undercuts Biden's moderate image, likely hurting him in the suburbs and among moderate voters

4. It wastes a valuable opportunity to help elevate the next generation of Democrats, which is *desparately* needed

5. It honestly just looks kind of pathetic. Two men of that age at the top? It just looks weak

Who else would unite it at this point?

There is animosity between the Warren and Sanders camps. I've seen many refer to her as "not a real progressive."

Pete is a moderate and gay. Older voters aren't gonna like an openly gay VP.

Kamala is divisive racially in a time where that would hurt.

The others are non-entities, in terms of politics.

I could see Biden uniting a good chunk of the Bernie base if he picks Ayanna Pressley as VP. She’s liked by both Warren and Sanders progressives and she’s the most “moderate” of the Squad anyway. I’m surprised she’s not in more conversations for the Veep to be honest.

Didn't Bernie himself even say something to this effect?

There are no upsides to offering Bernie a VP slot, unless Biden is secretly gambling against his own campaign!

Warren would be a much more unifying and effective pick than Bernie.

The Rose Twitter people who find Warren objectionable are a tiny fraction of progressive wing of the Democratic party overall, most of whom love Warren.  And picking Bernie at this point would be deeply alienating to women across the board, especially after Biden's pledge.

But it doesn't matter because Bernie is way too old to be considered for VP anyway.

Bernie is an unqualified, cranky, disheveled mess. We don’t want him. He had 5 years of 100% name rec, unlimited money, and a weak fractured field to take advantage of. He’s persona non grata.

He'd probably accept if offered, but it's obviously not gonna be offered.

If Bernie were Biden's running mate, I would campaign for Biden

It's probably not going to happen though.

Dems need a youthful running mate, all of the Dems running for Senate and House are much younger than their GOP collegues. That's why Bernie wont be picked. Candidates like JD Scholten, Joe Kennedy and Mike Franken need someone like Stacy Abrams or Klobuchar as a Veep, whom is gonna be presiding in the Senate as Prez pro Temp
