Missouri's redistricting committee went with the 5-2-1ish map.

We have our first change to the GOP draft plan:

In response to complaints from residents of Ray County (which was split between MO4 and MO6), Ray, Carroll, and Chariton are now entirely in MO-6, and MO-4 has taken a portion of Jackson County (which is now split in 3).
What portion of Jackson? Are there images or a bill anywhere?

That MO-05 reminds me of the MO-05 that existed in the 2000s, only it's sizably bigger. Goes to show how KC has bled population and fell in statewide population % over time.

That 5 is such a ridiculous shape. I mean, I'm glad it's getting bluer, but no proper KC district should include Lone Jack but not Independence.

I don't think the legislature would draw out Sam Graves...

I think I saw it on Wiki a year or two ago, I dunno. In any case it seems I was mistaken.

While that's an impressive gerrymander, I agree it's not happening.

Though Missouri had 9 congressional districts back then so you'd expect the district to be geographically larger now. Jackson County actually grew faster than the state over the last decade (after lagging behind it for many previous decades) unlike St Louis which still is bleeding population.

Kansas City has really had a dramatic recovery.

The causes aren't 100% clear, but after 30+ years of decline followed by stagnation, everything just took off between about 2012 and 2015 and the growth and construction is showing no sign of stopping anytime soon.

I was sad to leave in 2019 and start spending 3/4 of each year in Utah - it felt like I was leaving KC behind right as it was finally becoming "cool" again for the first time in decades.

I honestly, have no idea why that wasn't done in the initial plan, other than Wagner wanting more of St. Louis County. And yeah, given the stated desires of St. Charles legislators to keep the county whole, it probably passes unless there's a significant contingent of Republicans who are all-or-nothing for the first plan.

The loss of the supermajority in the State House is a gigantic embarrassment that will have real consequences for redistricting. As for Eigel, I remember him storming down the halls of the legislature at the end of session 2018 screaming about his bill getting killed (his fellow Republicans killed it because no one liked him). Since then he has been a thorn in the side of the Majority in the Senate, a notoriously dysfunctional body in the best of times. Four of six the members of the "Conservative Caucus" are sad losers that no one can standm hard to believe Denny Hoskins puts up with the rest of them but I suppose they have their uses.

It sounds a bit harsh that they'd kill a bill not because of its policies but because of a dislike of the author.

The Democratic caucus needs to come out in support of it right now.
Not yet, methinks. They shouldn't be too loud about it. If your opponent is in the middle of making a mistake, don't interrupt them.

Whilst I agree this would be the best strategy for the Democrats to take, it is quite a sad indictment of this whole process when a sensible, fair map is portrayed as a 'mistake'.

Agreed, and you've put it very well. It says a lot that Democrats are rejoicing at what is at the end of the day a fair map, and that GOPers are so angry about it. Not every redistricting needs to be a gerrymandering opportunity. In any case, the GOP is going all in in other states like TN.

Billy Long of the 7th district supports 7-1:

I think this is the first comment on the matter from a member of the GOP congressional delegation.

He's running for the senate and polling badly, so

a.) He needs to be in the good books of GOP partisans in the state and oppose any remotely fair map
b.) He has no reason to worry about MO07: he's retiring, so if it gets split up or somehow becomes more competitve (very unlikely given how red it is, but still), it doesn't impact him at all (assuming he will stay in the race and not go back and run for reelection)

The bill passed without amendments. MO-2 is R+5, down from R+15 in 2016.
