Also just in general, drug therapies are not political. There are no Republican drugs or Democratic drugs. You people, and the president, need to get a grip.

I agree, although one might make a case for Fox News being a Republican drug. Wink

Federal Support Ends For Coronavirus Testing Sites As Pandemic Peak Nears
Quote
Some local officials are disappointed the federal government will end funding for coronavirus testing sites this Friday. In a few places those sites will close as a result. This as criticism continues that not enough testing is available.

In the Philadelphia suburbs, Montgomery County has a drive-through site that has tested 250 people a day since March 21.

"It has been a very successful site. We are hoping by the time it closes Friday afternoon that we will have tested a little over 5,000 individuals," says Dr. Valerie Arkoosh, who chairs the commission in the county of more than 825,000 people.

4/8 (Today):
  • Cases: 434,698 (+34,761 | Δ Change: ↑2.77% | Σ Increase: ↑8.69%)
  • Deaths: 14,787 (+1,974 | Δ Change: ↑1.02% | Σ Increase: ↑15.41%)

Looks like new records today for both cases and deaths.

At the risk of being semantic, isn't that a given for every new day?

German antibody study indicates fatality rate of 0.37 percent

Quote
BERLIN — The preliminary findings of an antibody study by German virologists published on Thursday indicates a covid-19 fatality rate of 0.37 percent, information expected to inform government decision-making about lifting restrictions.

The study by researchers at the University of Bonn involves testing 1,000 individuals in the hard-hit district of Heinsberg in northwestern Germany in an attempt to ascertain the number of people who have been infected without realizing it.

The preliminary findings were based on results from 509 individuals, the researchers said in a news conference on Thursday.

Some 14 percent of the sample had antibodies for the disease, and an additional 2 percent had current infections. A death rate of 0.37 percent is well below the 3.4 percent case fatality rate cited by the World Health Organization last month and at the lower end of the 0.3 to 1 percent range that has been estimated by scientists.

Trump's hunch was right.

It's really something how we've gone from a number of possible drugs being tested that have some evidence they might work to Trump seemingly picking one (that he owns a very small investment in) and declaring it the best, to it being decried as a scam, all despite still ongoing global testing that predated Trump's announcement of support.

Oh come on. I agree with the poster above yours that it's not necessarily inappropriate for a doctor to be using their independent judgment to use these new treatments notwithstanding the fact that they are also active in Republican politics.

But isn't the real problem here that the president has on literally at least a weekly basis since taking office demonstrated complete willingness to not only ignore blatant business conflicts of interest and the well-being of both though running of the government and even the country's best interest for what benefits him personally, both monetarily and politically? When one deals with a presidency that has become synonymous with self-dealing, blatant and Unapologetic dishonesty, plus full-scale embracement of conspiracy theories, isn't it completely reasonable to assume the worst until proven otherwise at this point?

Let me emphasize, there's nothing partisan or "liberal" about such an initial inclination. I submit that is the proper response to this Administration taking any step or public pronouncement for anyone who hasn't either downed the MAGA Kool-Aid in copious and irreversable amounts, or otherwise been living in a cave the last few years..

In fairness, it appears they're largely practicing social distancing in an appropriately empty Auditorium, even if those two guys on the left should probably take a step or two further apart.

Hey, prayer never hurts. My only concern would be if such an individual says that such prayers are sufficient in lieu of social distancing and proper medical treatment oh, but again that doesn't appear to be the case. So, credit where credit is due.

Dr. Anthony Fauci: Virus Death Toll May Be ‘More Like 60,000 Than 100,00 To 200,000’ | TODAY

Quote
Joining TODAY live, Dr. Anthony Fauci says that even though the number of deaths validate that this is a bad week in the coronavirus battle, there are “some glimmers of hope” such as stabilizing numbers of hospitalizations in New York. He says that social distancing and behavior changes are “starting to have a real effect” and that the virus death toll may look “more like 60,000 than the 100,000 to 200,000” initially predicted. He dismisses “conspiracy theories” that coronavirus death tolls are inflated and says he’s “cautiously optimistic” that the country may be able to begin reopening by summer.

A death rate of 0.37 percent is well below the 3.4 percent case fatality rate cited by the World Health Organization last month and at the lower end of the 0.3 to 1 percent range that has been estimated by scientists.

Trump's hunch was right.

Roughly 3.5% of the Chinese patients in the case stats died.

Of those infected, only 20% showed symptoms and went to the medical testing stage. This was determined through modelling.

That left a base mortality rate of 0.7%.

Now if the German antibody test is accurate and was conducted on a similar population, that means for every 270 people exposed to the virus:

  • 1 person died.
  • 49 people developed symptoms which required medical attention and treatment.
  • 85 people got sick but showed limited to no symptoms (asymptomatic and were not tested).
  • 135 people started developing antibodies to their exposure almost immediately whilst never getting sick.

Which gives you a 0.37% fatality rate. Great news.

Wait 'til Donald finds out.

  • 150 people silently developed antibodies to their exposure almosy immediately.

Which gives you a 0.34% fatality rate. Great news.

I'm admittedly not going to take the time to read this article because it's pretty dense, but offhand I'm rather surprised considering one would think Physicians are the one area of business that would be booming now ( assuming they can stay healthy and not catch coronavirus in the process) Sad

In most places outside NYC/NJ, hospital/ER intakes have actually been down compared to before the beginning of the pandemic.  People are either deferring non-essential checkups and procedures or too afraid to go in due to the virus.  A 511-bed Hospital in Oklahoma City is temporarily closing due to a lack of patients.  I imagine private practice GPs are getting hit even harder.

It's the same thing back in Pullman. Zero cases of COVID requiring hospitalization, but their hospital has been forced to cancel elective procedures and increase staff to fight the pandemic despite admissions plummeting while everyone stays home and the students are out of town. Their finances are in the toilet now, and they're having to rely on donations to stay afloat.

Disastrous jobs data sharpens Trump's dilemma over closed economy

Quote
Staggering new data showing horrific job losses sparked by coronavirus shutdowns and projections of a lower-than-expected death toll are sharpening the agonizing dilemma confronting President Donald Trump.

How does he find the balance between keeping the economy shut -- to squelch the murderous pandemic -- and allowing a resumption of normal life in order to ease the deprivation now threatening many millions of Americans?
The President and officials around the country must answer if they are willing to exchange a return to the routines on which tens of millions of people depend for a likely consequent rise in the rate of infection.

Provided that there are no difference in strains or that we fully understands how this virus works.

Those proportions are clearly going to be very different based on country-specific social factors rather than variations in the virus itself.

I dont think Australia, Germany, USA and South Korea got the lesser version compared to Italy, France, UK and Spain.

Clearly testing rates in the latter countries are much lower as Dr Birx hinted yesterday.

The UK numbers have been a debacle. As an example, they (apparently) purchased over 3 Million antibody tests last month that dont work. They also don't report recoveries.

So data analysis only works well in Germany, US, South Korea and Australia.

Will wait and see how these numbers develop over time.
