Florida beaches set to re-open in a few hours, will only be open for 5 morning hours and 4 evening hours every day.

The Ron DeSantis Clown Show continues.

Florida has a decent testing situation so I'm not in arms about this.
BRUH

If people stand more than 6 feet apart at the beach is it really an issue?

It really seems like some of these super strict quarantine rules are more mean-spirited politics than anything. I read one Article where a girl was playing basketball ALONE in a small park so the local government came and removed the basketball goal. Stuff like that and the "no buying certain stuff thats at Walmart even if you are already at Walmart" policies and the ban on home gardening sales (literally a hobby that REQUIRES people to stay on a stationary piece of land) really seem like nothing more than decisions designed to make things feel worse. Its like when Obama had them rope off scenic parking areas from which you could view Mt. Rushmore that required no staff maintenance during the 2013 shutdown as though a shutdown means you cant even passively LOOK at National monuments. Had nothing to do with the lapse of funds and everything to do with "see how inconvenient it is when you dont give government its budget".

So if say there were 5 people walking on the beach and they are 20 feet apart, should they be harrassed by LEOs and if so, what for?

As usual, the stereotypes are more important than the actual facts. Florida actually has administered more tests in total than any State other than New York. That being said, they are 21st in per-capita tests as a function of their high population. Additionally, they have administered more tests per capita than South Korea. Florida had a bungled up response in many ways, and DeSantis got really lucky with a lot of things, but their testing game isn’t as bad as many States.
I still think opening the beaches was a mistake, but you can’t deny the basic facts.

Warm temperatures saved him.

Today's numbers look good until you notice that NY has only 395 new cases. That can't be right.

They're still counting a backlog of people who died weeks ago under the new rule on "probable" cases.

This is the best visualization I've seen on how serious the virus is:

For those speculating on a burst of infection in Wisconsin after the primary election was held in-person, so far there doesn't seem to be any signal from it. Hopefully it will stay that way.

A rather unsurprising development:

CNN: A sudden rise in coronavirus cases is hitting rural states without stay-at-home orders

Quote
Just as cases are starting to plateau in some big cities and along the coasts, the coronavirus is catching fire in rural states across the American heartland, where there has been a small but significant spike this week in cases.
...
The bump in coronavirus cases is most pronounced in states without stay at home orders. Oklahoma saw a 53% increase in cases over the past week, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Over same time, cases jumped 60% in Arkansas, 74% in Nebraska, and 82% in Iowa. South Dakota saw a whopping 205% spike.

The remaining states, North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming each saw an increase in cases, but more in line with other places that have stay-at-home orders. And all of those numbers may very well undercount the total cases, given a persistent lack of testing across the US.

Bad statistics. A responsible journalist would have shown the increase for all states.

A skilled propagandist, lawyer, salesman, etc. will present information in a way that will cause the reader or listener to make false inferences. It is just like when you are a witness  to an accident, but don't see everything. Your mind makes up things to try to make sense of it all.

The states with higher growth rates are those who appear to have experienced dispersion from more infected areas. If you have two areas near each other, more of those who travel from A to B will be infected, and infect those in B, than the other way around.

RI, CT, MA, MD, DE, VA from the NYC epicenter.

KY, IL, OH likely from Michigan and NYC.

AL and NM.

MN, IA, SD, NE, and WY likely from IL.

"The remaining states, North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming each saw an increase in cases, but more in line with other places that have stay-at-home orders. And all of those numbers may very well undercount the total cases, given a persistent lack of testing across the US"

This is written in such a way as to lead one to believe that they weren't quite in line with the more authoritarian areas. but close, and still increasing. Of course, cases are increasing in all states. And in fact, the increase in AR, OK, and UT are increase less than the national rate. The author may have cherry-picked the data to match his anecdote, since OK is not increasing faster than the national rate but WY is.

Also ND and UT have high rates of testing compared with country as a whole, and with low positivity rates.

Florida is the third biggest state but ranks 21st in testing last I checked. I wouldn't call that decent.
You do know you should either compare absolute numbers to absolute numbers, or per capita numbers to per capita numbers, don't you?

Florida is third in population and third in number of tests, just slightly below California.

Florida is 21st in tests per capita, and slightly above the national average.

I strongly dislike Ron DeSantis, but I don’t see what the big deal is about opening beaches, as long as social distancing guidelines are enforced.  How are they really any different than parks?  There is very little evidence of significant spread of the virus through the air outdoors.

Given that they are also breaking social distancing, these specific protestors should be reported+identified and not allowed to ever have a ventilator or ICU bed if there is a shortage. After all, personal responsibility and natural consequences, right virus-truthers?

The people that choose to go to the beach during a pandemic are the likely to be the same people who are FAR less lilely to take social distancing seriously.

What is the point of re-opening the beaches now if the state is under a stay at home order until the end of the month?

COVID incubation period is 5 days? That's not bad. Originally they were going crazy thinking the incubation period average was like 15 days.

Also, it looks like the impact of the voting is going to be minimal to Wisconsin's overall numbers.

So it seems that antibodies aren't working in fighting the virus, according to the WHO.

The median is 5 days, so half are more than 5 days, out to 14 when it has dropped off to nothing.

Um, social distancing is not being enforced on the beaches. This was barely after it opened today:

Did they say that specifically, or that there isn’t sufficient evidence to prove they are working? The two are very different.
