Kevin de Leon.

But Harris won't be VP, she would be AG.

Newsom would get raked over the coals appointing an airhead like de Leon lol

Is Kevin de Leon delusional? He would have finished with more than 15% in the primary had he run for lt. governor instead. What happens to Newsom if he picks de Leon?

All it took was one mention of de Leon for this to convert into the 3rd KDL thread of the week (knowing full well this thread started nearly a month ago)

Newsom would pick a placeholder or a young strong incumbent.

'Senator Arnold Schwarzenegger (D-CA)' would truly be the icing on the cake that modern American politics has become.

Xavier Becerra surely is the long-term replacement here.

I don't know about that, he's 62 & if he really wanted to be a lifer, then he would've stayed in the House. Not to mention, he'd probably be the next Democratic leader instead of Hakeem Jeffries.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that he is probably angling for the governorship.

What about Ricardo Lara? He was likely the young and gay politician you were thinking of, not KDL (who isn’t openly gay).

Doesn’t Lara have issues? https://www.sacbee.com/opinion/article234952877.html

I think Becerra would be a much better pick.

Not that familiar with Gomez, but I’d love to see Chiang as a Senator.

California is a clear case where the number of senators should be proportional to the population of the state.

So now that it's official, it might be worth asking what happens to Kamala's Senate seat. There is, of course, a huge bench of ambitious Democrats in the state and Republicans would, at the outset, have almost no chance. Does Newsom appoint someone who'll run, or does he choose a placeholder and let the battle happen?

Probably a placeholder or young minority candidate.

Previous thread: https://talkelections.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=379571

Now that Harris is Joe Biden's pick for VP, we should discuss who is appointed to her Senate seat.

Names discussed in previous thread:

  • Businessman Tom Steyer
  • LA Mayor Eric Garcetti
  • Rep. Adam Schiff
  • Rep. Barbara Lee
  • SF Mayor London Breed
  • AG Xavier Becerra
  • Former SF DA Suzy Loftus
  • Former SF DA and candidate for LA DA George Gascon
  • Lt. Gov Eleni Kounalakis
  • Former Rep. and Orange Co. supervisor candidate Loretta Sanchez
  • Rep. Katie Porter
  • Rep. Ted Lieu
  • Rep. Eric Swalwell
  • Former Gov Jerry Brown
  • Former PPT of the CA Senate Kevin de Leon
  • Former Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson

Notably California has not had a male senator since the early 90s. Also hasn't been one from SoCal in a long time. Big machine politics state so I don't think a Steyer would stand a chance. As someone who will probably be living in CA again in a few years I'd love Steyer, Lieu, Lee, Brown, de Leon, or Porter.

People who might run in 2022 and/or be appointed to the seat, depending on Newsom's goals. In no particular order:

Barragan
Porter
Garcetti
Becerra
Breed
Kounalakis
Padilla <- (this one in perticular)
Yee
Lieu
Newsom himself (2022 election)

There might be some celebrity or prominent individual who tries to go national in the 2022 race, maybe from Hollywood. Also anyone who gets screwed by the redistricting commission may try to move upwards.

Considering what Kanye is trying, I wouldn't count out Musk trying something politically in 2022, but not as democrat obviously. It will fail, but he's built up enemies in California democratic politics, and the clock is ticking until labor lawsuits start flying.

Maybe Jerry Brown gets chosen as a placeholder? Then the voters select in 2022.

Is she resigning now or does she stay in office until the election?
