So hard to tell these days. Where are you between liberalism and socialism?

Hard for me to tell myself. Tongue

A more serious answer: If I had to describe my worldview, it’d be something like: democratic socialist at heart, liberal in values, but with a growing (conservative??) appreciation of the limits of liberalism and its discontents.

I am more skeptical/apprehensive of “the Left” as a whole these days, and I blame some of the more Online activist New New Left for defining the campaign of Bernie Sanders - if not the whole contemporary Left-of-the-Democratic Party “project” itself - in an obnoxious way that helped sink Sanders’s presidential campaign this year.

Furthermore, I am increasingly convinced that the anti-imperialism of fools (think Tulsi Gabbard and her fans) are,  in their own way, as evil as Nazis — with the key difference being that the Nazis are easier to identify and they’re not as capable of smuggling in Assad/Putin apologetics via themes that appeal to those on the Left whom are aggressively opposed to the horrors of US imperialism (read: everyone on the Left).

Also, I have no patience for people, Left or Right, who start  talking about the Zionist/Israeli lobby in Washington - if anything, it’s much more accurate to state that political actors in the US have pushed Israeli politics to the Right. Benjamin Netanyahu is basically a Republican Party politician wearing the hat of Israeli Prime Minister.

On a more personal note: I find myself more willing to read and listen to people I disagree with, even strongly, though I’m still working on that. I don’t like laziness in argument or ad hominem attacks, which I think many of the most politically engaged people on all sides of any issue have gotten worse on, especially Online — and I admit my own culpability for contributing to this at times.

Basically, this is where I’m at right now. I’m sure I missed some things, so feel free to ask follow-up questions.

Our historical newness as the largest state in the Union, with major metropolitan centers defined by industries and cultures that pride themselves as being futuristic and cutting edge, whether in the South of the state (Hollywood) or the North (Silicon Valley). All of this has happened within the last century. Compare to the Northeast.

The second factor here is that we’re geographically separated from most of the country, both in population and in population density. And our major metropolises are looking out to the Pacific Ocean, smugly turning our backs on the rest of the country. How dare we!

And yes, you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

What is your favourite film from the 1990's?

Do you make an effort to go to the theatre for upcoming movies that you are looking forward to.

1. Even though it’s not a “great” film, Space Jam for nostalgic childhood reasons.

2. Not anymore! Tongue
