Richard Nixon run on a law-and-order platform in 1968. What would have happened if Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, who was responsible for a tough reaction on DNC riots, would have been nominated as a compromise candidate in a deadlocked convention between Humphrey, (Ted) Kennedy and McCarthy?

Although extremely intelligent & very hard-working, Daley was somewhat uncouth (i.e. yelling "f**k you" at Ribicoff during the convention) & I don't think he would've gone over very well on the national stage.

I’m sure Nixon would attack Daley for mafia ties and voter fraud.
