Steve West made national news two years ago when he ran for Missouri House District 15. It was news because two of his own children opposed their dad's election because of his bigotry. Well he is running for the Republican nomination again this year in the same district. The incumbent Democrat, who trounced West in the general election in November 2018, is term-limited so the seat is open. So far he has one opponent in the primary, unlike two years ago when he had three opponents. This time his name won't be first on the ballot like it was last time.

It's no surprise. Today's Republican Party is unfortunately made up of a lot of bigots.

No, my statement didn't have &/or reveal an obstinate belief in the superiority of my own opinions &/or a prejudiced intolerance of the opinions of Republicans (though, obviously, non-bigotry > bigotry). It's simply a mere fact that there are many bigots who have chosen to align themselves with the modern Republican Party.

Hillary won this district by a point. Carpenter won this district by 26 in 2018. What?

Carpenter was an incumbent. The seat is now open. What are the demographics of this district?

Don't underestimate the diversity of the Republican coalition. You have the bigots, the homophobes and the white nationalists.

The bigot won the Republican nomination, barely.
Out of 2,623 votes cast in the Republican primary District 15, according to the Unofficial Results, Steve West won 1,342 to his opponent's 1,281, or 51.16%.
So it's on to the general election against Democrat nominee Maggie Nurrenbern, who was unopposed in the open Democratic primary, and who had 3,480 votes in said primary.
I rate the race as Likely D.

No, I don't think so. Here are the reasons I think it is a Likely D race:
1) The redistricting commission that drew the statewide map of state Representative districts in 2011 calculated this district as 53% Democrat, based on results from the elections of 2002 to 2010.
2) Democrat Jon Carpenter won District 15 in 2012 with 56%, then he ran unopposed in 2014, unopposed again in 2016, and he beat Steve West in 2018 with 63%.
3) Clinton and Trump were virtually tied in District 15 in 2016 (I can't tell who actually had more votes because of one split precinct). But at the same time, Jason Kander easily beat Roy Blunt here, winning every precinct, and Chris Koster beat Eric Greitens, winning every precinct. Russ Carnahan won comfortably over Mike Parson for Lt. Gov., and Judy Baker and Eric Schmitt were virtually tied in the state Treasurer's race.
4) Two years ago, Claire McCaskill beat Josh Hawley in every precinct, and Nicole Galloway easily swept every precinct.

All in all, it certainly is a competitive district, but it leans a little towards the Democrats, and if Steve West could only garner 37% last time, Democrat Maggie Nurrenbern should pick up 55% or more quite easily this year.

Did the primary voters specifically vote for West because they know about his comments?

Republican Steve West only got 7,614 votes (41.81%) to Democrat Maggie Nurrenbern's 10,597 votes (58.19%).

In other news about the state legislature, Democrats failed to pick up any new Senate seats, so the ratio of the Senate will remain 24 Republicans to 10 Democrats. Democrats held on to the 1st and 17th districts, where they had some potential lose, but they also failed to pick up either the 15th or the 19th districts, where they certainly had strong candidates. Incumbent Republican Andrew Koenig won the 15th by 54% to 46% against challenger state Representative Deb Lavedender. Incumbent Republican Caleb Rowden won the 19th 51.6% to 48.3% against former state Representative Judy Baker. That Judy could not win the 19th is especially surprising: the 19th voted for Biden by 52.30% to 44.91% for Trump and it voted for Galloway by 50.53% to 46.99% for Parson.

It appears the Democrats have a one-seat gain in the House, which would mean a ratio of 114 Republicans to 49 Democrats. Two of the state House races are so close that there will almost certainly be recounts. In district 21 in the KC suburbs, incumbent Democrat Robert Sauls is ahead by just 25 votes out of 15,243 cast. Sauls has 7,634 and his Republican opponent has 7,609. And the race in which Democrats appear to be picking up a seat is also extremely close. In district 135, which is in the city of Springfield, incumbent Republican Steve Helms is behind his Democratic challenger Betsy Fogle by 34 votes: Fogle has 8,355 and Helms has 8,321 (and a Green Party nominee has 681 votes). That district, 135, is the only one that appears to have flipped.

Filing deadline passed today and Steve West did not file to run for any office.

But who knows? Maybe he'll try to run for some office in a future election cycle.

Not sure about his "bigotry" but won't bother looking into it because any man who can't keep his children in line has forfeited any chance of my support.

Steve West IS going to be on the ballot in District 15 after all: he submitted enough signatures to qualify and he's running as an independent. He and one guy in Springfield - District 132 - are the only two independents who got on the ballot this year for any federal or state offices in Missouri.

This is a laughably futile effort. He's only going to divide the Republican vote in a Democratic-leaning district. Incumbent Democrat Maggie Nurrenbern is a shoe-in to win with over 50% against both the Republican nominee and "Independent" Steve West as the two of them split less than 50%.

Yes, they pretty much are. They can't do much of anything without the consent of their guardian and outside of outright and clear cut cases of abuse, they are subject to pretty much however their parents want to raise them.
