I saw this discussed on Rachel Maddow last night as a good thing, but it strikes me as a huge failure of government action:

Why a Tiny Colorado County Can Offer COVID-19 Tests to Every Resident

They plan to test every single resident of a small Colorado county twice.  That’s great!  Why was the county chosen?  Because a couple of major biotech executive own a ski chalet there.]Because a couple of major biotech executive own a ski chalet there.

It is absolutely criminal that determinations of where testing is done is based on where tech billionaires vacation.  Private sector executives should have no say in where testing is done.  The biotech manufacturers should be commandeered by the federal government, who should determine how many tests are produced, and tests should be distributed where most beneficial to society.

(I do think it would be beneficial to test everyone in certain areas, whether symptomatic or not, but this is NOT how to decide which areas this should be.)

Meanwhile, by reopening Liberty U. to make Trump look good, Jerry Falwell Jr. is literally sacrificing children to honor a false god.

A woman purposely coughed on $35,000 worth of food at a Pennsylvania grocery store, police said. She likely faces criminal charges for coughing, one of the primary ways the novel coronavirus spreads.

The unnamed woman entered small grocery chain Gerrity's Supermarket in Hanover Township and started coughing on produce, bakery items, meat and other merchandise, chain co-owner Joe Fasula wrote on Facebook.

Fun fact, if you know you have a communicable disease and you spit on someone with a political motivation, you can be charged with bio-terrorism.

Now that some members in this thread have somehow gone back to 'this is all going to be fine' mode, I'd like to share this, from the John Hopkins Tracker. It shows the 70,000 Americans currently confirmed as having COVID-19, a fraction of the real total, if the testing regime is anywhere close to that of European countries.

The virus is already in every major population centre in the country, in every state, and every major city. There is no containing it, there is only mitigating the impact at this point. Drastic action must be taken, and sustained throughout the summer. This thing is going to cost tens or maybe hundreds of thousands of American lives this year. If sustained action to mitigate this thing are taken now, then it doesn't have to be millions.

We need martial law.
Also any governor who refuses to issue a Stay-At-Home order within 1 week, and Trump should be placed on death row after all this.

What do you think the map in China looked like 2 months ago?

China has 1.4 billion people, most of whom are crammed into an area the size of the Atlantic-Mississippi. The number of infected and risk of transmission both far exceeded what the US will likely see. The politics are different for sure, but the country has begun to open back up and normalcy has slowly returned for most Chinese cities. There is no question the virus has spread across the US, but this is not news. A bunch of angry red dots on the map say nothing about the prognosis for the country and nor does a comprehensive spread preclude a recovery. Suggesting millions of people might die because the virus is in every state is irresponsible and alarmist.

Yeah. Stop pretending like that USA's response is way different. Most of the Western countries have similiar'ish development.

No. I'm sorry, but no. I've spent the last four years studying for a bachelor's in Virology. Due to the UK lockdown, I will have to sit my finals four weeks from now, over the internet from my kitchen table. I've been watching this outbreak since January, and the US is the single least-prepared of the Western nations I've seen.

China sealed entire cities inside for multiple months, and lost thousands regardless. To date they've reported 81,000 cases. While there are reasons to doubt that number, it is significant only because the US will likely over take the total reported Chinese cases in the next 48 hours.

China held the worst of the infection (as far as we can see) to Wuhan. Every state in the US is reporting spikes in flu-like symptoms, and there is no chance of shutting down the US in anywhere like the measures seen in China, South Korea, or even Europe.

Those 'angry red dots'? Those aren't a plea for your emotions, they're cold hard data points, indicating the extent to which the virus has exploded in your country. It's the same problem here. London has set up emergency hospitals, and the prognosis is so bad because people refused to follow the rules.

Millions don't have to die. If we all follow social distancing, and isolate ourselves, we can starve the virus of potential hosts. But if you continue life as normal there's a non-zero percent chance that that is where we are headed.

The Democratic response to every issue (including Coronavirus) is nothing more than anti-Trump virtue signaling.

Oh come on. There's nothing partisan about how different local officials have responded based on Trump's response. Inslee and Newsome have been strict, Cuomo was strict while de Blasio was lackadaisical. De Santis hasn't responded strongly, JBE hasn't responded strongly enough, and there is the interesting divide between Beshear and Lee that others have noted

All it comes down to is that nobody wants to be the guy who shuts everything down. Smart local officials have done so anyway, while others who are more concerned with their short term approval have not. Thinking De Blasio is spreading COVID to spite Trump, which seems to be the argument here, is just its own form of Trump derangement syndrome.

If this was a partisan issue, why are Washington and California the best states on that chart?

It's really just Bill de Blasio and people in his administration.  BdB is not a Democrat.  We don't want him.  He is a socialist and a raging asshole with an approval rating of like 10%.  If it were possible to recall him, New Yorkers would do it.  He is the reason why NYC is so f**ked right now.  Now we can all see why Cuomo hates him.  Cuomo's taking this deadly seriously and de Blasio was like "lol here's my suggestions for how to spread it" as recently as two weeks ago.

This whole thing is just insane gaslighting.  Democrats were screaming at the Trump administration for like a month before this all exploded, and you guys and your president laughed it off.  Just more TDS and media hysteria, amirite?  You can just go back to the earlier coronavirus threads to see for yourself.  Heck, some of your governors are still laughing it off.  Look at Florida.  Look at Mississippi.  Look at Texas.  Look at Trump saying everyone should go back outside in two weeks.

You are cherry-picking the one guy who screwed this up on our side, who even we universally condemn, and saying that's representative of our entire party.  No way Jose.

Half of my infectious disease class was spent on the 1918-1919 flu outbreak.  Absolutely fascinating, especially the W-shaped mortality curve (age vs. SDR).

Yall really need to put him on ignore. Forumlurker has nothing helpful or useful to say about Corona response and the more yall interact with him the more he is likely to continue posting evil extreme alarmist bs.

Frankly if the government declares martial law over this (which they wont and no one even remotely credible is calling for) Im going to go on record endorsing actual terrorism to oppose it (future conditional so this statement doesnt violate TOS). And there will be a hell of a lot more of us endorsing the same. We can call ourselves the 99.7%.

Another big spike in new infections today in Italy.  Even the most patient people on this board said we should wait until March 24 to start to see a decline.  It’s now March 26, and still no sign the lockdown is working to reduce the spread.

Italy didn't increase their reported infections enough to pass China today... Which means that the US is probably going to pass both Italy and China tomorrow, and Italy will never have the most reported infections globally (except arguably tomorrow between when Italy reports a new total and when the US reports a new total).
