Alaska's extremely oil dependent budget is basically trashed due to the oil collapse, and that's after Dunleavy effectively sledgehammered so much spending that he vetoed federal Medicare money by mistake. People are trying to recall him, but basically the state is in a right-wing Venezuela style dream world that no politician has the courage to admit to: you cannot run your entire budget with the revenue from a single natural resource.

well you can, if you plan for emergencies and have an "out" for when the world stops caring about oil.

(also, right wing style Venezuela?  Are you really giving the right that much credit?  Alaska is a million times better than Venezuela.)

Venezuela and Alaska are both very dependent on oil to fund the state budget.

which they don't. There is only one country that remotely comes close, and that's Norway; which isn't really something you can replicate in any other state.

Alaska is better than Venezuela because it has the fortune of being in a First World Nation without the corruption and violence endemic in poorer countries, but in terms of economic planning, there's little difference between the socialist paradise of Chzvismo and low tax fossil wonderlands like Alaska and Alberta: politicians who train their electorates to have free lunch in boom times that implode in bad times.

Boom and bust cycles are why many leaders see rich natural resources (read: sellable commodities) as much as a curse, in the abstract, as it is a benefit.
Its either diversify or cry. Quite literally.
Though I dunno how much Alaska can actually diversify any more than it actually has.

A lot of states dependent on oil extraction will be suffering from lower revenues thanks to the Russian/Saudi spat. We’re definitely heading for a really bad recession this year.
