I rarely become enamoured with politicians to the point I bother to follow them, but I can't get enough of Brian Schweitzer.  Here is a 2004 interview with him:

http://spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13925

He does avoid social issues like the plague (he says Montana won't go for gay marriage, but makes it clear that it isn't necessarly his personal position) but other than that I'm surprised about how honestly he talks.

He doesn't suck up to his state - he calls it a "flyover zone," even implying that Bush won mainly because he had an R by his name and that 85% of Montanans would believe that John Kerry married a guy.

He talks like a populist (in the non-bastardised sense) but doesn't dumb himself down.  I can see why he's so popular in Montana.

Excellent.  We need more Democrats like him.  He seems to be of the Bill Clinton/Mark Warner fold - talk like a populist, govern like a libertarian.

He's really not much different from the average Democrat. He's mainly just more likeable. The posters on Daily Kos love him, by the way.

He seems to be fairly moderate from what I've read, but they probably realize he was probably the only Democrat who could have won that Govenor's race.

I'll have to do some more research, but I'll take your word for it.

Strongly Approve

Whatever Democrats are doing to win in Montana should be repeated in other states. This would mean liberals getting sidelined but if it helps Democrats gain seats then so be it.

I hate the DLC as a rule, but their candidates do manage to win somehow, so they must be good for something.

Schweitzer's not in the DLC (and he's pretty liberal as well).

I am constantly amazed by the misinformation I see on this board.

I'm not trying to spread misinformation, I just thought it was true.

I assumed most Democrats who win in red states would be in the DLC or Blue Dog group.

Dont forget that he selected a Republican as his running mate.  Not that theres anything wrong with that.  It just proves that heis very politically savvy, and knows what it takes to win.

If you like Schweitzer, this article is a must read.

Don't know much about him so I wont vote in the poll and I wont do a Mitty and say Disapprove just because he's a dirty populist. Smiley

As I was reading that article that you posted one thing made me laugh out loud. It was what he said about Clinton.

"Bill Clinton, well, he led with his heart, but it dropped about 2 feet lower in his anatomy later on."

From the article, Schweitzer is working to bring about an alliance of environmentalists and outdoors against the big corporate privization interests.
