As a sequel to my
1976 scenario, here's an alternate version of 1980. Note that for this timeline, we are assuming that Reagan and Bush are
not national candidates.
Having won election in 1976, the Democratic team of
President Carl Albert (D-OK) and
Vice President Frank Church (D-ID) decide to seek a second term in office. The Republican Party nominates
Senate Minority Leader Howard Baker (R-TN) for the presidency; he selects
Congressman John Anderson (R-IL) as his running mate.
For the Libertarians,
Mr. Ed Clark (L-MA) is running, along with vice-presidential candidate
Mr. David Koch (yes, that one) of Kansas.
President Carl Albert (D-OK)/Vice President Frank Church (D-ID): 248 EVsSenator Howard Baker (R-TN)/Congressman John Anderson (R-IL): 287 EVsMr. Ed Clark (L-MA)/Mr. David Koch (L-KS): 3 EVsUnhappy with the previous four years, voters give the victory to Baker and Anderson, along with a decent sized mandate.
