I've been listening to 90% of the countless different sub-genres of heavy metal for the majority of my life. I figured there might be enough lile-minded users here to have a discussion about bands, dongs, styles, sub-genres, and to ask each other for recommendations based on specific criteria.

Funny I just watched this video...which did nothing but reaffirm my opinion this is the worst "music" ever. My God...just listen to those vocals!

I put on this record to purify myself of it. Go listen to this instead.

Disappointed to see Evanescence's Fallen not listed here.  That one's a classic.

Very much approve of this list despite that, though.

hehe, you said "dongs" Smiley

I grew up on rock (Aerosmith,LZ,The Who), dabbled in metal (GWAR,Anthrax,Pantera) as a teen before I discovered punk (NOFX,Pennywise,Dead Milkmen) as a young adult.

Clearly, Ozzy and Black Sabbath kicked things off, but in the late 1980's, these albums really changed the game in metal music:

Metallica - And Justice For All....

One

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM8bTdBs-cw

Jason Newsted's first studio album with the band. After leaving Metallica around 10 years later, he revealed a very confused and self-centered bunch of individuals, including the drummer, Lars Ulrich who turned his drums up in the mix for this album at the expense of his bass playing. And as far as drumming goes, it does not get much better though. Later fans would remix the entire album with more appropriate bass volume levels.

Interesting fact: The film clip to 'One' features scenes from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" which the members of Metallica bought the rights for in order to keep showing the music video without having to pay additional royalty fees.

That is an unbelievably good album when in comes to metal. For you drummers out there, watch and learn from Dave Lombardo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y66x22PfOhc

The guy is one of the best drummers in rock/metal I have ever heard. He is the sole reason Slayer got to where they landed, and they owe their success to this guy.

Dave Lombardo is up there with John Bonham and Keith Moon as one of the top ten drummers of all time. I would put him in the "Animal" category from the Muppets.

In 1989, I had a choice of buying two LP Albums on vinyl.

1. Stevie Ray Vaughan - In Step
2. Morbid Angel - Alters of Madness

I chose the first, and got into blues guitar shortly after. But the original vinyl for the latter is now worth a fortune, so I wish I just bought it and never took it out of the plastic.

If you're into Deftones, British band Loathe just put out a new record this month that combines that style of nu metal with a gritty metalcore sound.

I don't know how into chaotic music you are, like if you've ever heard of The Dillinger Escape Plan or Converge, but there's plenty of great chaotic metalcore and hardcore bands around today that scratch a great itch for me.

I'm not much of an expert in "true metal" anymore, I still dig some thrash and nu metal stuff, but I can definitely help out with the more metalcore/hardcore side of things!

I was into old music even when I was young, so I have no recommendations here except keep the volume at a level that won't cause hearing damage.

If it ain't Baroque, it's Broken.

A better phrase would be "if it ain't Baroque, fix it"

I'm a big advocate for old school Swedish death metal. Awesome guitar tone.

it's making use of the same pun, but that sentence doesn't make as much sense IMHO.

The lead singer of DragonForce called myself and a friend a "c__ts" at a Toronto show once for chanting for them to play Tbe Final Countdoen as an encore. We were trolling and we deserved it. Good times.

Not bad at all.

Love the sound of that distortion guitar, very clear but with a decent amount of body. Good for chugging and power chords but especially riffing around in the low to mid notes.

Not sure why, but "Crystal Mountain" by Death has become tonight's unofficial South Carolina Primary theme song in my apartment. Hard to argue with a classic.
