Yes, it's normal for 17 year olds to smoke in public in Canada, though not extremely common. Mostly because the k8ds don't want the word on the street to get back to their parents. You might get an adult heckle you about how you need to quit, but nobody is going to try and literally force you to stop. Unless you're in a No Smoking area.

No, even tho both parents smoked, none of us four kids did. However, I'm old enuf to remember when cigarettes were sold in vending machines in some places, and even those that didn't had ashtrays for the customers. Moreover, at my high school, if you were 18 or had your parents' permission, there was a designated smoking area you could go to during recess/lunch break. 9th and 12th grade shared one lunch period with 10th and 11th having the other. It was split that way to make the number of kids roughly equal between the two periods.

I created this thread because I’ve seen it said that schools are legally obligated to punish students for possessing cigarettes because the students are under 18, but nobody has provided any evidence to support that.

I didnt even start until I was 19. But due to the new law passed earlier that year raising it to 21, I never kept it public until I turned 21. Now everybody knows

I only starting smoking when I was already 18. Also, in Poland you can legally buy tobacco products at that very age.

I know the CDC says that 90% of smokers start before they turn 18.

I started when i was 15, never had a problem buying my Marlboro Menthols, Quit when i was 20.
