Basically the definition of a sacrificial lamb if he actually got the nom. Barring some 1994 NY gubernatorial freak scenario, Walz would breeze to reelection even if 2022 was a Dem presidential midterm.

It's a very inspiring and frankly winning story. Assuming he doesn't go full blown Blakenship, he could make for an interesting candidate.

I'll defer to the experts (BRTD) to determine if he could win, naturally, but I think he'd be a good recruit. Why not?

The problem is that 'popular' incumbent governors have a good chance at reelection, no matter their states partisanship. If they are significantly unpopular, then they have a good chance at losing. Walz right now is fairly generic, so he would have to screw up to lose. The standard Republican 'successful well-known businessman' does well when given the resources for a legislative seat, (congressional/senate/state legislature) but when running for the Gov slot they easily could end up as sacrificial lambs. He could/would/should be a threat to Tina Smith if he ran for her seat, like he hinted multiple times before declining to pull the trigger.

Walz is uncontroversial due to the split legislature. This means he neither gets to sign expansive progressive legislation nor serve as a vetoing bulwark against overreaching movement conservativism (like Dayton was at the beginning and end of his tenure.)

That could change after the 2020 elections of course but it's tough to see Lindell running a winning campaign based on attacking Walz over marijuana legalization, capping the price of insulin, banning conversion therapy or expanding paid family leave, the likely agenda under a DFL trifecta.

Anyway I bet the candidate will be Michelle Fischbach. If she beats Peterson she won't be able to remain in the House unless she can pull off a huge longshot primary battle against Tom Emmer and if she loses she won't have anything better to do since she'll no longer have a path to the House.
