I am from literally the only metro area in the country where it's usually a "rummage sale". Though the term is used as a secondary one elsewhere.

Kind of a random metro area to have it's own term.

Yard sale and garage sale are both acceptable imo. Feel like I've heard both over the years.

Yard sale is more common than garage sale around here, but I've yet to see anything else used around here. By the way I once saw a real yard sale. The highway department was going to widen the road in front of a place with a very nice yard, so the owner was selling the sod that would otherwise be paved over.

If it takes place in a garage, it's a garage sale.

If it takes place entirely in a front yard, it's a yard sale.

If an entire neighborhood gets together to have garage sales at the same time, it's a neighborhood sale.

If a lot of people get together in a semi-public place, such as a drive-in theater, to sell stuff from their cars, it's a swap shop.

A rummage sale is a fundraiser held in a church basement.

Yard/garage sale. Both phrases are common down here.

this...except garage sale/yard sale are used interchangeably and it doesn't really matter where the sh**t gets placed.  I rarely see people actually selling things from inside their garage around here, mostly driveway with spillover going into the front yard.

I've heard garage sale and yard sale used just as much, often depending on actual usage of the garage. I've always assumed a rummage sale to be a larger scale gathering of various sellers in a public space

Yard/garage sale, usually used interchangeably around here. As stated above, the garage sale doesn't necessarily need to take place in a garage; it means you're selling stuff that came from your garage.

Yard sale unless it is literally a garage, in which case it is a garage sale. Rummage sales are different in my mind and are a bit more of a community-wide, one-time flea market. My high school, for example, hosted a rummage sale once a year where the school families would donate stuff to the school and the students would set it up to look nice and help sell it to both members of the school and the surrounding community.
