Would this change the result?

It might've changed the result in Pennsylvania but no other change from the 2000 map.

It might have put Lazio, Pataki's confidante into the Senate.

Bush-Pataki would win more than 270 electoral votes.

Pataki would beat Gore's VP in the debate.

In the longer term, Pataki may have helped Bush to flip New York in 2004 in a time of War on Terror after 9/11.

So does anyone think that Pataki's support of gun control and abortion rights wouldn't play a problem with conservatives?

It's hard to say.

One on hand, Cheney was unlikable, uncharismatic and from the reddest of red states, though at least had a lot of experience (WH CoS, House leadership, SecDef) to counterbalance W.

OTOH, W was seen as kind of vapid and inexperienced, and Pataki doesn't do much to counter that image. In 2000, he had 6 years as Gov (same as W), and was only a state senator and small-town mayor before that. He could have peeled off more moderate voters in the Northeast, but maybe some people would be turned off by a ticket of two relative neophytes.

In the end, I guess it's a wash. He really should have picked Jack Danforth.

I think they lose. Pataki being pro choice along with Bush's DUI arrest getting out depress evangelical turn out and narrowly hand Gore the election.

Disagree I think if Pataki was the GOP nominee at worst Bush would lose MO, WV, AR and TN which combined for 33 EV while it think Pataki being Bush's running mate nets him PA, OR and WI as well which combine for 41 EV.
