Tom Suozzi:

He also opposed gay marriage but supported a civil unions law for same-sex partners.

Eliot Spitzer:

He countered by saying that, as governor, he would introduce a bill to legalize same-sex marriage.

Ballsy move by Spitzer and I think it will have minimal impact.

Doesn't much matter, barring a major gaffe he'll win in a walk.  All this does is make me support Spitzer in the primary over Suozzi, but still with Weld in the general.

Well, if the Republicans nominate Weld, then the Conservative party nominee would at least take column "C" back and threaten column "B".

Essentially, it will annoy some socially conservative Democrats enough to get them to vote for the Conservative party nominee.

Independence will fall to column "D" (and might lose that to Working Families, depending upon whether Golisano dumps more money into that toxic waste dump).

Minimal impact in the gubernatorial election.  Spitzer looks like the kind of guy who will take a crack at the presidency, so I will say it will hurt him then.

Minimal impact.  Spitzer wins regardless.

It does prove, however, that Spitzer is, after all, as deranged as are some Massachusetts Democrats.

My view is, if same sex couples want to be recognized in a legal relationship, fine.  Call it a "civil union," with all the legal benefits and all the legal responsibilities that a marriage entails.

Leave the term "marriage" out of it altogether.  To me, marriage is the union of one man and one woman.

Sorry, "deranged" is of course not an accurate description, my apologies.  "Misguided" is more what I meant to say.  In my view, same sex "marriage" is a misguided concept.

Fair enough, and for the record, I wasnt attacking you.  I was just wondering if this issue alone was responsible for your strong dislike of Spitzer or is there other stuff?

I wouldn't say that I have a strong dislike for Eliot Spitzer.  I believe he is brilliant and that he is a dedicated public servant.

Most of his platform is reasonable, although, myself, I would like to see someone a bit more conservative, but we have to consisder, after all, he is a candidate for Governor of New York.

Personally, if I was a resident of New York, and could vote in the Democratic primary, I would choose Tom Suozzi, with the same sex marriage issue certainly being a determining factor for me.  Spitzer,  evidently, supports same sex "marriage," while Suozzi, evidently, supports same sex "civil unions."

Spitzer has zero chance of being President anyway. Besides, at least he took a position... he isn't following the Casey Plan.

In the 2012 thread he was mentioned but I doubt he'd win as a balding NY jew, no offense to jews, as is my father, but he wouldn't play well in the south.

Minimal impact

Though  would have to say as someone who likes both Spitzer & Suozzi, this may have me lean more towards Spitzer in a Primary.  This is the first I have seen Suozzi opposing gay marriage (he has expressed his support for Civil Unions in the past & stated he was strongly against the FMA, but this is the first I have seen him offer his position on the Gay Marriage other than opposing Bush's FMA
