Feinstein and Grassley, the two oldest Senators, are likely serving their final term. Who might run to replace them?

Are we not sure that these two will pull a Robert C. Byrd and decide to serve until they are carried out of the Capitol Building in a gurney? I would hope not, but it's a possibility.

As for potential replacements, Grassley could be succeeded by the state's current Governor, Kim Reynolds; Feinstein, by anyone from Governor Newsom to Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti to San Francisco Mayor Breed. Democrats have an enormous bench in California.

Might John Chiang (CA) and Fred Hubbell (IA) run?

I would love to see Ian Calderon return to politics and be Dianne's successor.

If not him, Barragan and Ma would both be excellent. London Breed wouldn't be bad either. I don't really like Newsom, however.

I honestly think Pat might run for Chuck's seat, making it a dynasty seat.

Knowing California, Feinstein’s replacement will probably suck just as much.

Porter would be amazing, but I’m not holding out any hope.

Ideally Porter.

lmao what?

The CA Assembly majority leader. He’s leaving politics to focus on raising his family since he’s only 34. What are you confused about?

I have said this before whenever Feinstein comes up, but there are three potential serious successors to her. Beccera has climbed the statewide ladder diligently and is understood to be the main candidate from Sacramento. Porter has the progressive base, a prominent position in Washington, and appeal to the growing SoCal democratic suburban electorate. Finally, there will always be some candidate from the Bay Area just because the Bay has too many Dem primary voters and too many Dem politicians. Maybe it's Breed, maybe it's Liccardo, maybe it's Khanna, maybe it's Spier, maybe it's Weiner. Who knows.

JD Scholten for Grassley, and Schiff for Feinstein, Grassley is sure to retire should Scholten win 2020 and Ernst loses as well, and Dems net the majority,  which is possible

In Feinstein's case, one of Nanette Barragan, Eric Garcetti, Fiona Ma or London Breed would be amazing. Adam Schiff should remain in the House and become speaker/Democratic leader once Pelosi steps down. I don't see Gavin Newsom running because he seems to enjoy being an executive. If anything, he will run for president in 2024 or 2028. Eleni Kounalakis would also be a good candidate, though I'd prefer her to run for governor after Newsom has completed his second term.

In Iowa, Abby Finkenauer would be terrific. But only if it's a Trump midterm, otherwise a Republican will be elected. I don't know who's there, Reynolds probably runs for reelection as governor.

Thoughts on Grassley:

Republicans want his grandson, Pat Grassley, to go for it. This is the worst-kept secret in Iowa. He is the speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives, and it's so painfully obvious they want him to go for it when his grandfather retires/dies. I think the original plan was for Bill Northey, who was the state Ag Secretary, to run, and for Grassley Jr. to run for state Ag Secretary, but that changed when Trump appointed Northey to serve in the USDA.

As for Democrats, I keep hearing State Auditor Rob Sand's name come up. It's very obvious he's going to run for something in the future, but nobody knows if he's more interested in governor or senate. If he passes on senate, I'd expect Cindy Axne to run.

It'll probably be Gavin Newsom and we'll be stuck with him for another 30 years.

At this rate, their shambling zombified remains.

In seriousness, though, I'd put my money on Mike Levin and Pat Grassley respectively being their replacements.

I think Grassley will run one more time in 2022, as long as he is healthy. Grassley will be a lifer. Maybe his grandson or current IA governor will succeed him.

Also, when will Inhofe announce his decision to run for reelection or retire?

Feinstein: Becerra, Garcetti, Lieu, or Porter.

Grassley: Axne, Finkenauer, or Scholten.

I have no idea about the Republicans for either.

California: Any number of Democrats. The 2024 primary for CA-SEN (assuming Feinstein retires then) is going to be insane. For Republicans, maybe Nunes? It's not like they have anyone else.

Iowa: Pat Grassley for the Republicans. Finkenauer, Axne, and Sand are potential Democratic candidates. I think Kim Reynolds goes for re-election as governor.

Both the IA and CA Democratic primaries are bound to be flusterclucks with just about every ambitious Dem at least contemplating a run. The GOP side of things, probably not as much. Grassley’s boy and some doomed (unless CA Dems mess up a jungle primary) California GOP businessman

I bet grassley’s grandson runs for senate in 2022.

I think Katie Hill will run for office again 🙄 my guess is probably senate.
