A simple question.  Nomo/Dorothy/Catholic doesn't need her fallacies polluting a perfectly good question and conversation.

Just a simple yes or no will do-and I won't hold anyone to anything or try to make a point.  I'm just curious as to the poll numbers.

Option 1 for me.

Yes, in that I think it's the best we've currently got.

I'm not really sure about whether or not I believe evolution as it's currently stated is 100% true, though.  I've never examined the issue enough to say one way or another.

Yes. While we do not yet know everything there is to know about the process of evolution (and I doub't we ever will) it is the most comprehensive theory we have got.

Yes, since Darwin’s theory deals primarily with Micro-evolution, which we have seen in nature in our life time.  Just this week it was announced that a new species of fish was found in Indonesian peat moss swamps, with water that is traditionally to acidic to support life.  That right there is an example of natural selection.

Yes -it is a theory that is science-based and can therefore be either proven or disproven through empirical means.  The same cannot be said for either intelligent design or creationism since one cannot prove or disprove the existence of God (central to both theories), and neither of which should therefore be taught in a science classroom anywhere in any public school.

You didn't come from a monkey, you are a monkey. And so am I. As by the way, Carl von Linné recognized a century before Darwin, and without any public outcry.

if the theory is true, and overwhelming evidence suggests it is, you and the monkeys are cousins, whether you like it or not

In general I believe in evolution although I think there are issues that evolution alone does not explain. We should also note that it is called the theory of evolution. Although there is evidence in its favor, as far as I know it is not proven.

I like being skeptical as much as the next guy, but that's not a relevant or valid point at all.  Do you question the theory of gravity?  Theory has a different meaning in a scientific sense than in an everyday common use sense.

Like every theory you test it and test it and most importantly you test it against and compare it to others. If we look at other theories on how we ended up with a diverse, but also underlyingly similar ecosystem evolution fits anddoes so better than any other at present.

I will acknowledge it's a theory, and could be as wrong as intelligent design... I just happen to believe evolution explains it better.

Considering that the "constant" of gravity has been disproven and replaced with a scale depending upon elevation, gravity is still considered to be a "theory."  That doesn't mean there isn't a force pulling you down, but it does mean that we don't fully understand it yet.

The fact that gravitational acceleration is not exactly constant has been known for a very long time. It is only approximately constant, and the reason for which this is the case are well-understood. This has nothing to do with gravity's status as a "theory."

His point was simply that the fact that it's a "theory" essentially means nothing, because absolutely anything found in modern physics is a theory.  The fact that it's a theory doesn't mean that people don't think it's likely to be true or that there are viable alternatives that should be given equal weight.

Newton developed his theory of gravity that took altitude into account (which is still more or less accurate) around 1687.  It's not as if the notion is a relatively new one that gravity is not constant with respect to altitude.

Well said, Lewis Trondheim.  Anyone who opens their eyes and looks around themselves will see that we live in an ape-society.  Have you ever read Great Apes by Will Self?  Good novel about a chimpanzee society very similar to our own type of ape-society:

Btw, too bad about von Linne, but isn't that like the anglo-saxons to steal something and pretend they thought of it!
