. Peter Tatchell - the openly gay Labour candidate was lampooned for his homosexuality and the Liberals - as well as others - fought a nasty homophobic campaign during the Bermondsey by-election of 1983. And it's taken until
now for Hughes to apologise.
That said it is unlikely I'd have supported Tatchell - but that would have been a question of his leftist positions being out of step with my more slightly left-of-centre leanings
Nevertheless, the voters of Bermondsey were deceived back then by Hughes and others. Despicable
, though it would not have been, however, had Tatchell's sexuality not been an issue in the by-election
Of course, Hughes - unlike Oaten - hasn't deceived a wife and kids. I suspect his admission came just as he was about to be outed
Hughes' sexuality is no concern of mine, it's the hypocrisy
