After the federal election of 2021, Angela Merkel won't be the chancellor anymore, even if the CDU have enough seats to elect the chancellor. Who will succeed her?

I only know this:

If the CDU chooses the toxic Annegret to follow her, the CDU is dead.

AKK as CDU chairwoman is still the default option, but she is in a relatively weak position. Other names that would come to mind are:
Merz (CDU, to the right of Merkel)
Laschet (CDU, about similar to Merkel, I would say)
Spahn (CDU, arguably to the right of Merkel)
Söder (CSU, to the right of Merkel, but steering towards the center)
Habeck (Greens, should the Greens become stronger than CDU/CSU or in the unlikely case of a GR2 majority)

All in all I think that NRW governor Laschet could be it, but who knows.

AKK already is chairwoman.

It's about the next Chancellor (candidate).

Do you think it is possible that the CDU elects a Chancellor candidate other than AKK and then replaces her as CDU-leader as well with that person ?

I meant "AKK is the chairwoman and hence the default option".

Good question. Chancellor candidate and chairman have always been much more connected in the CDU than e.g. the SPD. Therefore nominating a different chancellor candidate than AKK while at the same time keeping her as chairwoman would be difficult. The SPD has done this several times, but the CDU ("Kanzlerwahlverein") not so often.

If things go on as they're going now, then the CDU will probably beg Merkel herself to run again.

AKK has simply failed.

Of course, there's a worse possibility. But it wouldn't look good for a certain somebody to step down as President of the European Commission after only 2 years.

And Merz is making his old mistake of underestimating Merkel & the inertia of the CDU again: he's attacking too soon & too harshly; again, his old mistakes.

Or all of this cancels itself out, & yet a worse thing happens. Spahn is strangely popular.

Speaking as an American, I would like to see a staunch Atlanticist and USE supporter, like Merz or Ursula, become Chancellor. It would be good to finally have a solid and supportive ally in Europe, particularly one as powerful as a German Chancellor.

Hot take: Merz will try to take AKK down, but burn himself in the process, leaving an opening for Laschet to become the savior of party unity.

The only options from that poll which seem remotely possible are #2, #3, #4 and #7.

AKK, but it’ll be a disaster.
