Bolton is a nasty piece of work, but he is scared of any personal consequences should something go wrong and he should be criminally responsible. I'm guessing that this classic warmonger sees Donald Trump as a potential war criminal who will drag anyone close to him at the time of some horrible deed to the Hague Tribunal.

We have new potential charges of High Crimes and Misdemeanors in plotting or threatening Crimes against Humanity. Bolton might be delighted to see some senior officers of the Iranian Revolutionary guard dangle, but destroying great cultural relics? That is not his style.

I can easily see the next Democratic President yielding a President and his evil-doing flunkies to a Hague Tribunal which has a high conviction rate and which has long prison terms for those convicted. For someone like Jean Kabanda or Slobodan Milosevich who has lived well, such is quite a downfall.

I would say the House should just go ahead and subpoena him if he has now announced that he is willing to testify. Schedule hearings in a few days to a week or so, no need to wait on McConnell, who will never do anything about it in the first place.

Yes, they definitely should do this, but of course they don't have the cajones to.

When does Bolton's book come out?  If this is just a publicity stunt for a book tour the House Dems should subpoena him.  He has no excuse now not to.  If he doesn't they should hold him in contempt.  He has no legitimate reason to avoid a subpoena now.

It's up to the Senate now... and many of us believe that Mitch McConnell already has the fix in.

The impeachment is going nowhere anyways, the fix was in the House, because Chris Matthew's protects Hunter Biden. So, calling Fox news a biased network, isnt right, because Chris Matthew's cant even moderate debates due to his bias towards the Biden. Its backfiring due to Bloomberg and his ads helping Bernie

The R senate, without a whistleblower,  isnt removing a sitting Prez, whom have a job approval rating, where Obama and Bush W were, and has a 3.5% unemployment rate.

Just like Ds refused to remove Clinton in 1999 with a boom economy

Dems didn't control the senate in 1999. Unlike then, the prez hasn't a 60-65% approval rating either. And I don't know what impeachment has to do with Bloomberg ads supposed to help Sanders? Which is a wild theory backed up by no evidence anyway.

Why don’t Democrat’s instead push to give John Roberts control of the trial like a normal judge does in any other trial .

That would be much harder to decline

Seriously that was only slightly more coherent than a post from t_host1.

The cover up begins
McConnell has the Votes to Start Impeachment Proceedings on his Terms meaning we'll likely get Opening Statements and deal with witnesses later.
Mitt Romney backed his Proposal as did Senators Collins and Murkowski.

Let history remember that Romney, Collins and Murkowski decided, the day after a star witness offered to testify for the first time, that a trial for the most powerful man in the world should not have any witnesses.

For Susan Collins, let voters in 2020 also remember.

If someone hurt you or your family, Collins would say "yes, let's have a show trial, witnesses are unnecessary."  Party of law and order, folks.

What do you want? The President removed from Office. That is just not going happen and you know it. There ain't 67 Votes to remove Trump. Pelosi knows it as well.
The longer she holds onto these Articles the more likely it is Impeachment will turn against the DEMS.

To be fair (at an official capacity, anyway), they are basically punting the question of whether or not to have witnesses, not dismissing it altogether (even though that's likely where this is headed).

Trump-backing Republicans have been crowing that impeachment will backfire against the Dems ever since Pelosi made the official announcement.  Short of a few shifts here and there, that backlash hasn't materialized.  The same could be said for those that have insisted that impeachment will see a surge in popularity.

Neither has happened to a significant degree.

While I'm wary of Pelosi's strategy here -- she, IMO, has much weaker ground upon which to stand as McConnell can do exactly what he did here: put his foot down and refuse to budge -- the numbers and data indicate that people have pretty much painted themselves into their respective corners.

Pelosi isn't going to sent these two Articles over until after the January 14th CNN Democratic Debate in Des Moines, Iowa.

Why would she sent those Articles over to hurt Klobuchar, Warren and Sanders?

The next scheduled Debate after January 14 isn't until the after the Iowa Caucuses so plenty of time after January 14 to get this done in two and a half weeks.

This guy is an absolute disgrace. Any trial needs witnesses. It's de facto an admission of guilt, because why no witnesses if you're innocent?

I want an actual trial, with actual witnesses, and some semblance of an actual legal proceeding.

It's like To Kill A Mockingbird.  Everyone knew that Tom was going to be found guilty by a racist white jury.  But Atticus Finch still does his damndest to present the case, lay out the facts, and defend Tom.  Not only because that's how progress happens, by good men striving their hardest against injustice, but also because this is America, and in America we follow the laws of justice.

We don't just lay down our principles and accede to an insulting, degrading show trial simply because the jury has already been rigged and the outcome is already known.  That's what happens in oppressive, backwards countries.  Here in America, the laws of justice are the foundation of our society, and we must follow them, regardless of the outcome.

The Republicans, led by Mitch McConnell, want to have a quick show trial where they completely ignore the charges of impeachment, spend a few days giving speeches on the Senate floor about how awful Joe Biden is and how lawless the Democrats are, maybe bring in a hand-picked "legal expert" to say Trump is 100% innocent and the Democrats are the real criminals, and then vote to acquit and move on.  A complete mockery of justice, a stain on our nation's legacy and an insult to the American people.

Also, for the record, if Obama or Clinton or Biden were impeached, I would want the same thing, an actual trial with standard legal proceedings.

Of course, such a trial would still be a national disgrace because the Republicans, who have no shame, would abuse every inch given to them to disrupt the trial with absurd conspiracy theories and political maneuvering.  But this is the age we live in now.  We can't throw out our institutions and scrap the rule of law simply because one party has abandoned any principles outside of craven pursuit of power.
