Since when has Faber actually involved himself in redistricting? I dunno if I recognize that name...

Legislative lines. I have no idea what is going on other than perhaps trying to use the threat of the clock to sneak another through that the court would frown upon.

Revised my fair Ohio map:

This should be fully compliant with all the legal requirements in Ohio.

Commission voted down the DEM plan 5-2 again. Republicans have nothing to propose themselves and spent the entire meeting so far doing nothing but obstruct and provide zero solution. The deadline is in less than 12 hours and they are in a 30 minute recess.

Looks like it'll be going back to the court AGAIN. Stupid pricks.

"We've tried nothing and we are all out of ideas!"

If they don't have a map for the court, then its time for a Legislative special master, or a special mapper who will provide a selection that complies with the courts orders for the commission to vote on.

I look forward to the federal judiciary stepping in to remedy the failed process that is Ohio state legislative redistricting.

Aren’t they basically just saying that whatever map gets passed this time around won’t be in place in 2024? Is there any other way to read this?

Ohio commission adjourned without passing a map. They will not be making the deadline.

Why are Dems so incompetent at this? Why aren't they just using Rodden's map, which is more compact and gives them more seats than their own proposal? Plus, the OHSC has pointed to it as a constitutional map already.

So to summarize:

*GOP members of the commission made no attempt to meet and only held a single meeting, the day of the deadline for legislative maps.

*GOP members of the commission made no attempt to create any proposal or provide suggestions to the proposal put forth by the DEM members of the commission. They instead voted it down on a party line vote after bad faith, unproductive questioning.

*GOP members of the commission, particularly DeWine and LaRose, stressed the importance of meeting the deadline and adhering to the court's decision, again while making no effort to actually pass a map or propose one themselves.

*The commission effectively ignored the dozens of publicly-submitted maps and hundreds of publicly-submitted comments.

*GOP members of the commission gave up and didn't even attempt to follow the court's order and chose to miss the deadline for legislative maps.

....This was their plan from the beginning. They're going to use federal courts to override state court rulings against their trash gerrymandered maps. They will never allow a normal map or even a lite R gerrymander to reach DeWine's desk.

Aren't federal courts bound by state court interpretation of state law? Given that, I don't see how the federal courts could possibly allow a map that SCOH explicitly said was unconstitutional.

The GOP's justification on Thursday was that it was 'impossible' to do comply with the order and other parts of the constitution. Well, the court said in it's initial order that the plaintiff's example maps attached to their briefs were acceptable and legal. So trying that line would probably find them in contempt and give the court justification to strip them of at least part of their authority. Really we are at the point, given LaRose's complaints about deadlines, that emergency action will be undertaken.

The main purpose of whatever such lawsuit is that the leaders can't be blamed for their own incumbents being drawn out.

Again the most important constitutional fix Democrats should do if they don't want to do a direct PR system and bring in other parties is try to shoot to increase the gubernatorial veto percentage to 2/3 instead of 3/5. 3/5 is pretty easy for any regular majority party to achieve while 2/3 takes a much larger effort.

What's the point? They're out of time. Isn't it up to the Court now?

That was for legislative maps. Congressional is not due until March.

Commissioners Plead innocent. DeWine notably pleads that he had little role over the actual mapping. Dems say they are trying to comply, but the GOP isn't having it.

Republican Paul Miller presented a Congressional map before the commission today, which focused on congressional lines. Others testified before the recess until tomorrow, but didn't have maps. An Akron Dem noted he didn't think Geauga belongs with Akron. If this is the future plan, then the court will probably just appoint a master, which they can without jumping through hoops like on the leg side.

IDK don't commission Dems have a strong incentive to make a deal and lock the map in for the decade?
