As Sam said we need to pass this or something bad will happen. I hope we can do it in three days. Smiley

Might I make an informal suggestion to the Senate? Perhaps you can vote to cut back $21.75 billion of other spending in the same bill, to balance out the new expenditure.

No, just because you don't want the government to help anyone doesn't mean we should follow your advice.

Red herring.

I have never suggested that this bill should be rejected. I merely suggested that, in order to maintain a low budget deficit, you could cut other spending while passing this bill. You know, how some real-life Senators proposed to cancel the Bridge To Nowhere and use the money saved in New Orleans?

I'll be willing to look where to cut in March when we need to start working on the budget. I'm not going to just cut 21.75 billion from random areas just to keep the budget change at 0%, that's a bad idea. I never said I don't want to cut the budget to make the deficit smaller, just not in teh way you said.

I dunno, I think it's a sound suggestion.  I liked the Coburn amendment relating to pork barrel spending and Katrina.  The only problem would be finding some section of spending that enough Senators agree is unnecessary.  Regardless, I get the feeling that in some, but not all, cases these suggestions are criticized because of who proposed them, not because of their merit.

Of course, it's not necessary to amend the bill now, as that would doubtlessly upset some people.  A commitment to make up the money in the short term is not a bad idea, though.

That settles it. It really was a mistake to bring finances into the game.

I think the last thing we need right now is another f***ing row about f***ing spending.

The bill has enough votes to pass.  Senators have 24 hours to change their votes.

With 7 yeas, 0 nays, and 0 abstentions, the legislation is passed and presented to the President for his signature.
