It generally doesn't cause more Co2 emission to produce an expensive chair than a cheap one, so it's an odd example.
that's not a safe assumption to make
Quote
The leather used for the expensive chair will be from cows slaughtered for meat, so that doesn't cause any extra methane emission.
that's assuming there is no negative outcome to the environment from the tanning process...(hint, there is...a lot, certainly some of it is going to be in the form of Co2)

What's bad for the environment and what affects climate change are two different things, there is no reason to talk about "the environment" in the abstract when discussing climate change, it's two different problems (some of the measures necessary to curtail or mitigate climate change will even harm the environment). Methane is a far more potent climate gas than Co2, so that's why I focused on that. Whatever extra Co2 emission is caused by tanning is negligible compared to the methane emission from the cows.

Lastly, "that's not a safe assumption to make". Why not? It's a myth that the production of luxury items is more Co2 extensive than the production of cheap stuff. Transport costs are e.g. going to be the same.

Cheap chairs made in Sweden don't need to travel thousands of kilometers from Italy (one of em is Italian I believe) , so it really depends.

You are right about the cow thing tho.

It's not that much of an issue, it's just that I don't like people who pretend to be the average joe and blame others for things.

Greta wouldn't care about the new insulation laws in Gernany which are set to save some Co2 because her parents can afford the apartment regardless of the fairly big cost increase, but they don't get not everyone can live like that.

The idea that changing individual consumption patterns is an effective way to fight climate change is neoliberal horsesh*t anyway. We don't need to "each do our part" or whatever paeans eco-capitalists love to go on about. What we need is draconian legislation to restructure our economic system and bring the megacorporations that put us into this mess to heel.

Yes, capitalism is the root of all environmental evil. And we need to stop child-birthing.

I doubt much cheap furniture is made in Sweden these days (it wouldn't be cheap if it was..). E.g. IKEA has outsourced all their furniture production to China and other Asian countries.

It's likely a coincidence that the person making this found those chairs at an Italian site (or maybe it was an Italian guy making it). None of them are produced in Italy.

The Egg Chair is part of a Danish brand that has all their furniture produced in Poland and the Swiss company Vitra produce all European made Eames chairs, so while they're both imported it's from places closer to Sweden than Italy (and Asia..).

In general there are more luxury products made in Western countries than cheap stuff, so the carbon footprint from transport is usually bigger when you buy cheap stuff.

Basically a way for the people running polluting industries and careless governments propping them up to say "see, you're as guilty as we are... maybe even more".

Hopefully the Green Party wipeouts the CDU to SDP levels but the CDU will be narrowly first or second.

Speaking as someone who has to use DB on a semi-regular basis, it’s nice to see someone with a media profile pointing out what the rest of us already know - that thanks to years of CDU budget surplus fetishism, their service is falling apart at the seams

Still far better than the joke that passes for rail service in the UK..
