And by "ready for" I mean that almost all of the country would not significantly take into account the variable factor.

If you're talking that no one would make a big deal about it, probably only the fourth and fifth, as long as they were straight Christian males. Being from a race rarely seen as a victim and not holding any differing religious or cultural differences is the key.

None of the above, obviously.  The US is a nation of bigots.

Probably none, but most likely is woman (Hillary) or Jewish (Feingold).  Both would be hindered by their gender/religion, among other things (Hillary is horribly division, Feingold is twice divorced and a poor).

I voted a Jewish President but a woman is also possible though I didn't vote for them. And I wouldn't mind any of those become President as long as they have the same views as me.

1-5.

Collin Powell probably could have been the first Black president, if he had wanted to run.

There are a fairly sizable number of female politicians in major offices with signifigant enough credentials to be taken seriously in both parties.

The next three are quite plausable given the right candidate (that is, the candidate happens to fit in that group - rather than making it a major theme in their campaign).

I think there is still too much bigotry for America to accept the idea of an openly gay president.

There are still too many negative stereotypes about Muslims for one to have a realistic chance at this point in time - no matter how secular they might be.

Though someone who was quietly agnostic might have a chance - an openly avowed athiest probably wouldn't in the current climate.

He is by far the poorest US Senator.  His net worth is something like $150,000.  That's lower than mine.

Tweed is right. As of his 2005 filing, his net worth was something like $147,000, and that's likely to get even smaller now that he and his wife divorced.

The guy still has a mortgage and drives an average car. I think he may be the only Senator who's not a millionaire.

And by "ready for" I mean that almost all of the country would not significantly take into account the variable factor.

All of these would have a sizable minority opposing them due to their attribute, but conceivably a candidate with a strong base could garner enough votes to win.

A black or Jewish candidate would probably be the most likely to do it.

A lot of these are unlikely also due to their low percentages of the population.

Female, Jewish, Hispanic

America is ready for a Black President only if he/she were Republican.

I didn't choose Asian, but I suppose we're ready, its just that they are a much smaller percentage of the population, and there's hardly any Asian politicians outside Hawaii. A couple Reps from CA, one from Oregon and former Gov. Gary Locke of Washington (who gave a really awesome Democrat State of the Union response in 2003).

Jewish or Women, because those groups have blended in the most with mainstream American society. Honestly, those are the only groups I can realistically see winning the Presidency in the near-term.

Sadly only a woman president or a Jewish one. Any party could put a woman on their ticket and potentially win, though the Democrats more than the Republicans would be sympathetic to a Jewish President. The next generation would probably accept a black President. Sadly I don't think America (and many other western democracies) will be ready for a gay president for quite some time.

I don't a Jewish candidate would lose too many Republican votes because he was Jewish that another Democrat could win. Most people bigoted enough to do that wouldn't vote Democratic in most cases anyway.
