I’d be careful who you pick as a political hero - Blackford has, like Johnson, spent the past week trying to cover up for an MP credibly accused for sexual assault.

Pardon my ignorance, but just how many ministers are there?  And (while this number seems to change every few minutes) how many are left?

I don't have the exact number, but there are around 23 cabinet ministers and each of these has a number of junior ministers (of which most of the resignees are). Not having a full team of junior ministers makes it hard(er) for a department to function, and there are genuine questions as to whether it's possible to fill the vacant positions.

There are well over a hundred ministers (of whom most don’t have a seat in the cabinet) - Johnson has lost over twenty of them by now. It’s a little strange though as the government is primarily haemorrhaging junior ministers - the only two cabinet ministers to resign were Sunak and Javid.

It's been suggested that that some aren't resigning because they want the government to function (as it were) for the next however long.

The plan being reported now is that a number of grandees are going to visit Johnson. If he doesn't resign, then more cabinet resignations will follow (Gove and Coffey are being named).

If the 1922 votes to amend the rules tonight (as it seems possible?) to allow a VONC, could we see a vote as early as next Monday? Or is the process more drawn out than that?

According to one source it could be as early as tonight. Either way I doubt they want the rotten tooth to linger.

The process is shorter than that (same day or overnight), the only reason it went over a weekend last time is because of the Jubilee and because the Parliament was in recess (MPs were out of town).

Failed to check it for typos, but this does feel like 1992...

Still think he's not quitting until he is actually forced out - perhaps almost literally.

We were frequently reminded last month that Theresa May survived a VONC but was out only six months later.  Boris looks like he won't last six weeks after he survived his.

It really is amazing just how quickly this is all falling apart for Johnson. I knew his continued time as PM was dependent on support from a number of members that was not very deeply-held, but I didn't think it would all collapse in just a handful of days.
