My thoughts:

1. Case is tired of being in the House and  is too anxious to wait for either Akaka or Inouye to retire.
2. Case can run as the youthful candidate with new ideas and a vision for a "New Hawaii."
3. Case can run to the left of Akaka on ANWR.
4. Republicans might have a chance to steal this seat if Gov. Linda Lingle runs for the Senate
5. What happens to Case's House seat now that he won't run for reelection?

This is a political bombshell. What's next, Rep. Nick Rahall challenges Robert Byrd?

He has no chance.  Akaka and Inouye are more than politicians in Hawaii: they're icons, like Kennedy is in Massachusetts and Byrd is in West Virginia.

What a stupid, stupid move on Case's part.

Wasn't he the heir apparent to that Senate seat anyway?

Yes. He could have waited 6 years or ran for Governor against Lingle.

Yes. He could have waited 6 years or ran for Governor against Lingle.

At least with Lingle, he would have lost without damaging the Democratic Party much.  This case both hurts the Democrats and ruins his career.  I have no idea what Case is thinking.

But the Hawaii Republican Party seems very good for the most part, so I'm all for it.

When one of the 2 finally retires, is there a chance Lingle could take the seat?

NOOOOOO!

(unless he wins, of course).

Couldn't he have just waited a bit?

It's understandable, yes (and I love how he tries to make an issue out of the seniority...but unless Akaka decides to bow out of the race, I really just don't think he can manage it.

And it's a shame, too.  When Inouye (or Akaka) retired, he'd have the seat anyway.

Bah.  Best Democrat in Hawaii (and one of my all-time favorite politicians), and he goes and does this.  Damn.

Well, here's wishing him luck in his campaign.

Is he related to Steve Case, former chairman of America Online?  Steve is from Hawaii and last I heard, he moved away from Virginia back to Hawaii to start a pineapple farm.

Wouldn't surprise me--both from Hawaii, both Williams grads--probably related then.

What a dumbass.  Not only is Case going to lose but he'll make Akaka more vulnerable (potentially) and open up a House seat.  I wouldn't vote for him for the sole reason of having somebody that stupid in Congress.

Why is/was Case this popular on here? Just a comprehension question.

Both from the class from whence come representatives, senators, and most of all CEOs.

Because he's one of those business-friendly DLC Dems so many people here like. For that reason the far more liberal Akaka has my support.

He will lose in a landslide. The ethnic Hawaiians will not vote for him.

No doubt. This is Hawaii we're talking about. His House seat is in no danger at all, neither is the Senate seat, regardless of who wins.

Very often in politics, good fortune comes to those who wait and Case has blown it. An act of stoopidity Roll Eyes, I'd say

This isn’t the first time Case has taken on Hawaii’s Old Boys’ Network.  Last time he barely lost a three person primary with no runoff for Governor.  One on one, he might just have a shot and if he waits for one of the Senators to step down, I doubt if he'd be the heir apparent instead of Abercrombie.
