And it actually sounds like a pretty good idea to me:

Quote
President Trump’s long trumpeted pet project, the creation of a new branch of the military called the Space Force, is now finally on the cusp of becoming a reality, thanks to a new bill that may be voted on today by Congress. If it does go into effect, the bill will stand up a Space Force that is much different from what Trump originally proposed — one that won’t require any substantial restructuring within the military. But it’s possible that this watered-down Space Force could eventually lead to changes in how the military conducts its space operations in the long term.

The new provisions are included in the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, which determines the military’s responsibilities and strategies as well as authorizes funds for the coming year. The bill, if approved, would establish the Space Force as the sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces, making it the first new military branch to be created in more than 70 years. However, the Space Force will still be housed within the already established US Air Force, similar to how the Marine Corps resides within the US Navy. The Air Force is already responsible for conducting most of the military’s space-based programs, and the Space Force will simply carry on those same functions under the Air Force umbrella.

...In reality, the pending Space Force would be more of a corps than a force, and it shouldn’t require any major budget increases to implement. In fact, much of the personnel within the Air Force who currently work on space will simply be transferred to the Space Force, according to the NDAA.

It still seems a bit premature to have a space force. I would at least wait until we have the infrastructure to set up permanent installations in space, and then send them together.

There's actually no substantive reason for this, except for the Rule of Cool.

I wholeheartedly support this:

Quote

Historically speaking, wouldn't the better comparison be the Army Air Corps before the Air Force was established as its own branch in the years following the end of the Second World War?

How many times has the tax code been changed since the founding?  How many are widely remembered?  Surely none of them prior to Reagan's, and that was less than 40 years ago.

It is entirely plausible that a US Space Force will end up doing something that is remembered 1000+ years from now.

Regardless of it being one of Trump's pet projects, I simply don't like the name "Space Force". It sounds like something out of bad sci-fi fan fiction. I'd much prefer "Space Corps", "Aeronautical Corps", or something else.

Is this really necessary? Space should be left science only and not be militarized in any way. We can spend these dollars for more useful purposes.

The so called Tax Reform is a GOP fraud that mainly benefits Mr. Trump's rich buddies, who even didn't pay enough taxes before. True tax reform would have increased the tax rate for top incomes and lowered them for people making 120K a year and less.

I just don't see the point at this time.

'Space Force' sounds like something we'd want to look into establishing 50 - 60 years, not now. We still aren't very capable in space, and the vast majority of our progress has been in the pursuit of science.

This new branch is just going to be unnecessary overhead with little to show for it, likely for decades to come.

I know that we got something for it, something good, but I can't get over Trump's insistence that this is even necessary at this point in time. I'll take it over just getting the "Space Force," but think about what a time we're living in where we have a President whose biggest policy goals are completely pointless.
