5 people confirmed dead and 25 Australian tourists missing after visiting an island volcano off NZ's north coast.

As a geologist, i would advise that the temperature of the ash in the initial explosion would be monumentous and likely burn all people in the immediate vicinity.

A steam explosion with hot sulphidic volcanic ash exploding and then landing on top of you is not pretty for an oxygen based biological organism.

It's not a heavy eruption, more of a phreatic eruption similar to Mount Ontake - weak but dangerous and unexpected, and with no place to flee, the people in the immediate neighbourhood were doomed. There were no warnings at all.

It's really hard to figure out who is missing.

"Forty-seven tourists — many of them from the Ovation of the Seas cruise ship — and guides were on the tiny island when the volcano erupted on Monday afternoon, blasting a plume of smoke, ash, steam and rock more than 3.5 kilometres into the sky."

"Of the 47 people on the uninhabited island at the time of the eruption, 24 came from Australia, nine from the United States, five from New Zealand, four from Germany, two each from China and the Britain and one from Malaysia.

"I would strongly suggest that there is no one that has survived on the island," police Deputy Commissioner John Tims said, of the eight people still missing."

6 already died out of the 23, so we are looking at 14 souls lost.

The bodies in the volcano are still not recovered.

Burned were a couple on the honeymoon from Virginia. Husband is not well.

Very tragic news. Two more victims in hospital have died overnight. Brothers Berend and Matthew Hollander were travelling with their parents.



Berend and Matthew were born in the USA and moved to Sydney two years ago with their parents.

So incredibly sad.

Tour guide Hayden Marshall-Inman was remembered for his "superlative people skills and broad smile".

Hayden was a New Zealand native who traveled to Maine during his summers to work at the YMCA Camp of Maine in Winthrop.

High school sweethearts Richard Elzer and Karla Mathews, both 32, were cruise passengers on a shore excursion at the time of the eruption. Both have died as a result of the eruption.
