James Veltmeyer, a San Diego doctor and South American immigrant, began a campaign to recall California governor Gavin Newsom, citing that his leadership has led to cities becoming "overrun by homelessness."

Veltmeyer is joined by Erin Cruz. Both have launched petitions to recall the governor. 1.5 million signatures are needed to trigger a special election.

If the Oregon and Colorado GOP failed, then good luck finding enough to sign it in the ironclad California behemoth. Hell, they can't even count on the normal GOP base for the million plus since many live in rural northern and valley areas inaccessible to canvasers, if they are serious.

Its very doubtful this goes anywhere. Even they did get the required signatures Its hard to see a recall vote succeeding

Even if this almost certainly won't succeed, 1.5 million is really quite a shockingly small figure considering the losing candidate got nearly 5 million votes in the last election. These recalls are shockingly open to abuse.

Agreed. Even if this is going nowhere, I'm skeptical of recalls in general. Elections, especially in a presidential system, can't just be repeated over and over again just because one side is unhappy with the result. There needs to be some time for governing rather than campaigning. And if a governor or any other elected official has done serious wrongdoings/been corrupt there is always the possibility of impeachment.

Wasn't this guy dodgy about where he went to med school?

Yeah.  Good luck, doctor.  I'm sure California will magically revert to the Nixon days once that nasty Newsome is gone.

LOL this will never go anywhere. Since at least 1968, every gov was attempted to be recalled and it only worked out once in 2003, which is not comparable to 2019.

The recall signature threshold for an office should be 50%+1 of that office’s most recent election vote total. It’s absurd that like 20% of the voters can launch a recall election over and over.

Newsom is far from popular, and is in my opinion one of the worst governors in the country. However, a recall effort of him is not justified.

What is it with the GOP and their hatred for republicanism?

They can't win at the ballot box so they want to game the system by forcing low turnout recall elections instead of trying to actually win.

Ah yes, the GOP are the only ones who try to recall politicians. Got it.

This is what happens when democrats tried to open pandora's box with their failed scott walker recall in 2012.

GOP figured they might as well try it repeatedly. with the same rate of failure.

Are we forgetting about the Republicans doing the same thing in California in 2003?

I guess  I'll post this here since  this is the only CA thread  up right now, and it also pertains to the dying CAGOP.

Another republican flips with Chad Mayes standing under No Party Preference, defecting from the Assembly GOP. His districts straddles Riverside and San Bernadino counties. It's increasingly clear that you will find better luck as a faction inside the state democratic party than as a GOP politician on the outside.

Chad Mayes was the party's caucus leader in the state assembly. Hilarious.

That was right after a re-election though, with the Governor facing near unanimous disapproval even as he lucked out that his opponent was a mega billionaire.

None of the other recall attempts fit those particular circumstances.

This petition might get dozens or even hundreds of signatures. Do not underestimate its importance.

The Recall if effective,  will put in another D or R that's still not responsible for homelessness. Trump came here, and didnt follow up on what to do about homelessness. It's a wasted effort. Only when a Dem majority in DC is empowered,  they can bring about more housing for homelessness; subsequently,  McConnell wont bring Section 8 up to the floor of Senate, Schumer will
