Gaetz would be a very weak GE candidate. What are his foreign policy credentials? He'd be the Republican version of Dukakis and would lose unless Biden manages to maintain horrendous approvals.

What were Trump's foreign policy credentials?

^^^

what where obamas? bushs? clintons?

It's been awhile since we had a president with serious foreign policy chops, and that wasn't why HW got elected. I don't like Gaetz, but he's a bad candidate because he can't expand his appeal.

Wouldn't Biden be considered as a president with serious foreign policy chops?

good point, can't believe he slipped my mind. I'd argue the point still stands, as he wasn't elected because of his foreign policy experience, but you're right that he's easily the most experienced we've had since HW.

I mean, if that's the point you're going for, then it doesn't really apply to Poppy either, since he wasn't elected due to his foreign policy experience so much as the fact that he was seen as a Reagan 3rd term. You'd have to go back to Nixon before you arrive at a President who was arguably (& even then, only arguably) elected because of their foreign policy experience, be it real or perceived.

Apparently Mike Pence still hasn't patched up his relationship with Trump yet...

Quote
Advisers to former President Donald Trump say he still has not expressed remorse for the siege at the US Capitol, which could end up being important for Senate jurors to consider after House impeachment managers on Wednesday released new video of the violent mob's assault on January 6.

One of the new clips show then-Vice President Mike Pence and his family being hustled away by Secret Service as the siege was under way. That affirms what Pence aides told CNN in the days following the deadly insurrection. Some of those aides were outraged with Trump and believed he had put his own vice president in danger.

Pence, who plans to keep laying low during the impeachment trial, has not quite patched up his relationship with Trump after what happened, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The source said Pence and Trump "discussed everything" that happened on January 6. But at the time, the source said, both men were more focused on just getting to January 20 -- Inauguration Day.

Miscalculation by Haley, anyone perceived as being an outright anti-Trumper won't win the nomination. And no, this isn't her just speaking her conscience, she's a calculating politician like the rest. She wouldn't say this is she thought it wouldn't help her candidacy.

Insofar as she does have those things.

I mean, I assume she does sleep sometimes.  So during those periods, she isn't conscious, but otherwise she is.

I’ve never seen her do it but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Haley's well aware that being a woman and a minority is already disqualifying in a Republican primary and probably keeps her off of the ticket for most potential nominees. She isn't running.

Nikki is clearly going to run and differentiate herself from the Trump crowd by taking and winning the establishment lane.

Any chance Haley had of winning in 2024 are out the window. I'm not sure why she would even choose to repudiate Trump. Denouncing him in such harsh terms is career suicide. Either she plans on retiring from politics and is trying to save her image in the eyes of Democrats or she is extremely out of touch with Republican voters and thinks this is a winning strategy.

Former candidate for the Vice Presidential nomination (or...all 1.02% of the delegates who voted for her) of the Libertarian Party Sorinne Ardeleanu is in for 2024 as an independent.

She's the one that talks about healing all the time right?

I’m calling it now that Biden will win re-election, for one simple reason: The Lichtman Keys will be strongly in his favor if he runs, and he’s privately said that he’s planning to run again. He understands how risky it would be to retire after one term due to the fear of Trumpism returning. If he is in good health, he will run and he will win.

Source? I'm as big a believer in Biden as anybody, but even I hadn't heard &/or seen anything about this.

Do you more so mean that a strong economy and high favorable would lead to Biden running again? or do you mean that the actual keys themselves will be the reason he runs again?

So Biden's first 2 domestic presidential trips will conveniently take place in 2 of the 5 most important swing states. Hmmm:

Gaetz has been the subject of 2024 speculation, but Gaetz himself has been talking up DeSantis 2024:

https://www.wfla.com/news/florida/florida-rep-gaetz-hints-at-possible-desantis-presidential-run-in-2024/

Quote
Gaetz, a Republican who represents Florida’s 1st district, suggested on Fox News later that day the Biden Administration is attempting to defame DeSantis in anticipation of his potential presidential run in four years.

“What Ron DeSantis didn’t say, which is the truth, is that the Biden folks know that if Donald Trump is not the candidate in 2024, the leader of our movement will be Ron DeSantis,” Gaetz told the network.

“He is a strong potential presidential candidate in 2024, the Biden team knows that, and so they’re trying to somehow cast aspersions on the Florida experience because you know what, throughout America, there’s a lot of Florida envy right now.”

Welcome to the Forum! FYI, though, this is just a news megathread, not a "guess who's running" megathread. That's what basically every other thread on the 2024 board is for (for the time being, anyway).
