'Impaler' sinks his teeth into governor's race
Self-styled "vampyre" Jonathon Sharkey is running for governor on a platform that includes impaling terrorists.

Dane Smith, Star Tribune
Last update: January 11, 2006 – 11:08 PM

Looking for something really, really different in a political candidate this year?

Take a gander at Jonathon (The Impaler) Sharkey, who will launch his gubernatorial campaign in Princeton, Minn., on Friday the 13th as a "satanic dark priest" and the leader of the "Vampyres, Witches and Pagans Party."

Since there's nothing but a $300 filing fee to stop anyone from running for statewide office, campaigns in Minnesota typically attract colorful and eccentric characters looking for attention. And of course, former Gov. Jesse Ventura broke the mold and got elected. But Minnesota may never have seen a more outside-the-box politician than the Impaler, also a former pro wrestler.

For starters, he describes himself as a "sanguinary vampyre ... just like you see in the movies and TV, I sink my fangs into the neck of my donor (at this time in my life, it is my wife, Julie), and drink their blood," he said in an e-mail.

The 13-point platform on his extensive website (www.jonathonforgovernor.us) offers a number of conventional policy initiatives, including emphasis on education, tax breaks for farmers and better benefits for veterans.

Quite some distance from the mainstream, however, is his pledge to execute -- by impalement in front of the State Capitol -- terrorists, rapists, drug dealers, child abusers, repeat drunken drivers and anybody who preys on the elderly.

"I'm going to be totally open and honest," he said. "Unlike other candidates, I'm not going to hide my evil side."

Sharkey's religious convictions also might be described as well removed from the middle of the road. Call it compassionate Satanism. "On a whole, those who worship Lucifer are no more evil than those who worship other gods," he says on his website.

From Sharkey's autobiographical sketch:

"In August 1988, while visiting a relative, I met a girl who was totally
taken by me and who I was. She was hott and sexy, so I drove her
home that night on my bike, and slept with her. Though I do not regret
sleeping with her, in 1996 I found that she was my half-sister who I
hadn't seen since 1970. Talk about letting your ego get the best of you."

Uh...that explains a lot about his present state...

Um, I don't think this guy will have an impact on the race.

They should be watching out for Hutchinson, the IP's candidate.

It's Nomo, he doesn't know what he's talking about and just raves.

He's still running AFAIK.  Hilariously, his wife was recently fired from her job as a school bus driver, and she's now suing the school board for discrimination based on her faith.

Yes, I heard about that. I hope she wins too, which she should, it's blatantly illegal under Minnesota law to fire someone because of their religion.

How do you know that is why she was fired?

On Saturday she tearfully read from the letter the Princeton School District gave her employer, Peterson Bus. The letter says, "It is our opinion that Ms. Carpenter does not serve as a role model, nor is suitable to provide transportation services for the Princeton School District, in light of recent media reports of her husband/friend to be a vampyre who is running for public office, and Ms. Carpenter informing other bus garage employees that she is a witch."

It'd be a travesty if her suit fails. We all know firing someone for being a Muslim, Buddhist or atheist would never stand, no reason this should be any different. The school's claim is hilarious too. Since when are bus drivers role models? And how does one's religion affect their ability to provide transportation services?

Vampyre candidate for governor arrested
Associated Press
http://www.startribune.com/467/story/216549.html

MORA, Minn. -- A fringe candidate for governor who played up his satanic side — and pledged public impalement for terrorists — wound up behind bars today thanks to a sharp-eyed sheriff's dispatcher.
Jonathon Sharkey, 41, of Princeton, was arrested Monday night on two felony counts from Indiana, said Mike Smith, the Mille Lacs County jail administrator. One warrant was for escape, another for stalking.

Sharkey launched his campaign last month under the banner of the Vampyres, Witches and Pagans party. His platform includes an emphasis on education, tax breaks for farmers and better benefits for veterans, but he also said he favored impaling certain wrongdoers in front of the State Capitol.

Sheriff Brent Lindgren said Sharkey's warrants were discovered by a dispatcher making routine warrant queries. Lindgren said the dispatcher had seen news stories about Sharkey's campaign and recognized the name on the warrant — Rocky Flash — as a name Sharkey had used as a pro wrestler.

Sharkey was arrested by police in Princeton without incident, Lindgren said. He remained in the jail Tuesday pending extradition proceedings.

Roger Rayl, a spokesman in the Marion County, Ind., prosecutor's office, confirmed outstanding warrants for Sharkey but didn't immediately have details on the cases.

Sharkey has formed a campaign committe for governor, but actual filing doesn't occur until July.
