I remember reading somewhere that he supported the War in Iraq, and he still does so to some extent.

Douglas? That'd doom him for sure.

douglas has called for a withdrawl of american troops.

He's not "a better Democrat", the Democrats is a liberal party, not a socialist one. There is a vast difference.

You don't have to be a socialist to for example oppose the war in Iraq.

So... less than 60% of Vermont backed Kerry over Bush, but they'll support a socialist over some RINO 70-25?

Why? Sanders is a good constituency Rep. by all accounts

I'm sure he is, but a self-proclaimed socialist being elected 70-30 is quite a feat.

Eh...no, of course not, you can be whatever and oppose it, a lot of racist conservatives do, for instance. I don't see how that's relevant here...

Sanders is not a Socialist, he used to be a Socialist. Big S. Socialist Party, the one with Eugene Debs, Norman Thomas and Michael Harrington. However this was a long long time ago - although IIRC he was still a registered Socialist when he was first elected to public office (but not IIRC when he was first elected to the House.) He's been an Independent for ages.

How's the Vermont House race shaping up - that sounded like the only VT race at least potentially worth watching?

How's the Vermont House race shaping up -

Peter Welch (Democrat) is the clear favorite.

Sanders is a social democrat like many many Democrats. I can see any difference between traditional American social liberalism and modern European social democracy. Definitely Ted Kennedy or Hillary Clinton are more socialist than some "socialist" like Blair.

Vermonters do like many centrist/rightist Finns in the next sunday elections they will vote for person not for ideology.
