#PeteForGovernor is trending on Twitter right now. A lot of people online want Pete to drop out of the presidential race and run against incumbent Indiana governor Eric Holcomb in 2020.

Would Buttigieg do this? Would he have a chance?

Seems to be a lot of former Beto supporters who are salty another young golden boy has taken their king's place. Many of the tweets are from the same few people!

Buttigieg would get absolutely destroyed in this race and he’s almost certainly smart enough to know this, which is why he won’t run.

If someone like Pence was in office, I think he'd have a chance.

Holcomb, though?  His approvals are stratospheric, and he has a very Mitch Daniels-like reputation.  Very few people actually hate him or want him gone, which is why you've got a bunch of joke candidates filing on the Dem side.  Hell, I'm even thinking of breaking my "No more Republicans ever" rule to vote for him.

Buttigieg would have an actual chance here if he ran. It would be a close race.

Holcomb isn’t losing, and I doubt Buttigieg would even want to run.

There's a reason Pete is running for president in 2020 instead of scooping up the gubernatorial nomination (which would be his the moment he entered the race if he wanted it): he and everyone else knows whoever gets it will be canon fodder when Holcomb wins by 20 points next year.

What a silly idea, Pete would have been better off primarying Donnelly and hoping his opponent was Luke Messer or Todd Rokita.

I doubt he would run, but he'd get blown out if he did.

Buttigieg would perform better than the other joke candidates for sure, but he won't get enough to win. Running as a Real LiberalTM would work well as we've seen in Kentucky.

Buttigieg has shown zero interest in Indiana politics for a few years now outside of who won the South Bend Mayoral Democratic primary. Democrats around the state were late supporting him because Buttigieg had nothing to deal with them.

As much as I like Mayor Pete, there is no way he'll beat a popular incumbent Republican governor in a red state in a presidential year. Now if Holcomb was a Bevin type who was deeply despised, it might be possible, but as it stands now he actually have better prospects of becoming the Democratic candidate than winning against Holcomb.

Mayor Pete would be an excellent governor and it would be a good training ground for a presidential bid, but I think he wouldn't be elected statewide. Sadly. This is why I hope he'll get a cabinet appointment, especially under Joe Biden.

With that being said, I don't think he will enter the race. Very, very unlikely.

Do keep in mind that the Indiana Democratic Party pressured their nominee out of the 2016 Senate race and replaced him with Bayh two months after the primary - they could do the same with Buttigieg after the DNC.

He would lose, of course.
