After losing the election, Matt Bevin is crying that there were "irregularities" and wants a recanvass. The odds of him prevailing at a recanvass are zero, so legislators are threatening to overturn the election results and declare Bevin the winner. It's hard to see how the Kentucky Supreme Court will allow that.

If that succeeds, why can't Democrats who were in the Kentucky legislature in 1988 retroactively award Kentucky's electoral votes to Dukakis?

The Republican State Senate leader said that because he believes the votes for the Libertarian probably would have gone to Bevin, that would make Bevin the "clear winner."

Well I guess that means we need to immediately install Al Gore as President, since the official margin in Florida was literally 10 times smaller than this one and there were sure as hell enough Nader votes to make that difference.

Seriously, if they actually get away with this it will be terrifying for democracy. I'm worried that they are testing the waters to see how far they can go when Trump loses and refuses to step down.

The Libertarian probably drained more votes from Beshear anyhow, because the Republicans support big, intrusive government more than anyone.

That or they just would have sat the election out. Clearly these votes were protest votes against Bevin. Counting them as votes FOR Bevin is just ridiculous. Not that I would put anything past the GOP when it comes to undermining democratic elections when they don’t get their way.

Also the state Libertarian Party’s official statement on the results was that they were glad to play spoiler and furious at Bevin for things like refusing to legalize gambling and pot — making the idea that a vote for them was interchangeable with a vote for Bevin even more ridiculous.

It’s also gonna look particularly dumb to claim mass Democratic voter fraud when there was clearly a massive number of split tickets that were straight R except for Bevin.

1.  If the legislature thinks the Libertarian votes should've gone to Bevin, then that's their own damn fault for not enacting Ranked Choice Voting.

2.  If this is going to be a "contested election" when Beshear won by over 5k votes,  why the heck wasn't Bevin's 2015 primary win a "contested election" when he won by 82?

There seems to be alot of republicans in Kentucky who dislike Bevin. One of them being Mitch McConnell. That makes me think there wont be an actual attempt to overturn the results.

Funny how Republicans always accuse Democrats of being sore losers. Anyway, unless Kentucky has some obscure law about run-offs, this is going nowhere.

This may very well be prescient of how 2020 will go if Trump loses. Birds of a feather...

Basically any election a Democrat wins is de facto illegitimate according to Republicans.

I don't give him much chances of success, but he's well within his rights to obtain a recount. That's how we avoided turning the Queens DA office over to a JD acolyte.

Beshear had a clear victory. Sorry Republicans, but you win some you lose some. Same with Democrats. There are countries where political Party takes precedence over democratic processes. China. North Korea. Not traditionally the United States.

It has become abundantly clear that Republicans have no interest in democracy when it works to their disadvantage

It's cool when this thread is on the front page and it looks like Bevin has thrown a toddler, which given Bevin's history seems plausible.

An under .5% victory in a statewide race isn't a clear victory. It's a razor-thin victory subject to change.

That being said, Bevin already going full conspiracy doesn't make me think he's got a good chance. If he actually thought he won on miscounted votes and absentees, he'd be playing this a lot smarter.

Probably not, but the Kentucky media isn't exactly the real world.
