Neither are particularly good choices, but I'd probably go with Carter.

Brown ran, but I don't think he made it to the primaries, IIRC. At least he was out pretty quickly.

I think I would have voted Carter.

Definately Kennedy. Carter had been discredited in foreign policy by the hostage crisis and at home by energy shortages, unemployment, and inflation. America had had a series of discredited presidents ever since JFK was assassinated. The name connection with "Camelot" and the generally optimistic early 1960s would have made Teddy a serious challenger to Reagan.

Faced with these choices, I am not surprised so many Democrats crossed party lines to vote for Reagan.  Tongue

Neither, BTW.  I would not have voted in the primary.
