Alito gets "well qualified" rating from American Bar Association

By Jesse J. Holland
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito received a unanimous "well qualified" rating from the American Bar Association today, giving his nomination momentum as the Senate prepares for confirmation hearings next week.

The rating came after a vote of an ABA committee and will be delivered to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will launch Alito's confirmation hearings on Monday. Alito will face almost an hour of questioning from each of the 18 senators on the committee.

The ABA rating — the highest — is the same that Alito received back in 1990, when President Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, nominated him to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

I thought Democrats cared about the ABA???

At any rate, this is expected and maintains Alito's strong position in the nomination process.

Well, I was pleasantly suprised with Roberts.

Perhaps Alito will show the same sense of real judicial restraint (as opposed to the conservative judicial activism endorsed by Scalia and Thomas).

Perhaps.

The job of the Senate is to advise and consent, not to rubber stamp, so hopefully they will get decent information from their hearings.

Scalia and Thomas are the least activist judges.

Don't they all get 'well-qualifed' as a matter of course?

I think it just means they actually went to law schol, anyway.

No -Robert Bork, as I recall, received mixed ratings from this organization that helped doom his nomination to the Supreme Court by providing additional ammunition to his liberal critics.

It seems odd that liberal members of the ABA would not then rate this current right-winger similarly.  Perhaps they've been replaced by stooges since the Bork affair.

Interestingly enough, the Constitution Party today came out in opposition to Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court.

The Constitution Party is also a joke.

The fact that I think it means diddly, like Jfern & Opee, scares me.

Considering this rating is generated in part through interviews with hundreds of his peers, this is a good sign for Alito.

In PA, where judges are elected, it is reasonably common to see a lower rating.
