No hindsight.

In 1956 America was happy. The economy was fine, the business world was booming, all seemed peaceful on the World front. President Eisenhower has had a very easy first term. His greatest problem was a heart attack he suffered in 1955, but he had since recovered from that. At the GOP Convention Eisenhower was easily re-nominated. Harold Stassen attempted to drop Vice-President Nixon from the ticket and replace him with Massachusetts Governor Christian Herter, but nothing came of this.

The Democrats had a wild primary between 1952 nominee Adlai Stevenson, Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, and Governor W. Averell Harriman of New York, who had the backing of former President Truman.  Stevenson won the nomination after a convincing win in the California Primary. His issue was nuclear proliferation. He wanted to sign an atomic test ban treaty with the Soviets. He felt that atomic weapons would be the horsemen of the Apocalypse for the World, and he turned his run in 1956 into a crusade against the bombs. His running mate was nearly Senator John F. Kennedy and Senator Hubert Humphrey, but Senator Kefauver was named his running mate by the Democratic delegates.

Eisenhower

I'd have voted for Stevenson in 1952 (probably) but Eisenhower did a very good job as president, and therefore he gets my vote after 4 years of service.

I liked Eisenhower, but would've picked Stevenson in 52. I guess I'd vote Eisenhower, even though Stevenson was very worthy of the Presidency.

This campaign had one of my favorite campaign incidents; the infamous "Hole in the Shoe" gaffe by Stevenson. Cheesy

Also, this was the campaign the original "The Manchurian Candidate" was based on.

Of course, had he been a Democrat... Tongue

Ditto… Stevenson was a good and honourable man but out of the two Eisenhower was better suited to be president, that taken into account they where by and large pretty uninspiring choices!

Draft Earl Warren! Smiley
