Mr. Trump broke the deal for no reason other than the right telling him to so and damaged our credibility long term. If he got the 2015 deal, he'd be running around and say how this is proof he's the best negotiator in the world. For sure, the agreement was far from perfect and Iran is a horrible regime, but breakling to deal is one of the biggest foreign policy blunders since W invaded Iraq.

I was pretty iffy on this, but at this point the main problem in getting a new nuclear agreement is the lack of unity among American allies and states that haven't withdrawn from the JCPOA. Iran is openly violating it and countries like Germany, France, and China refuse to take any action, except to oppose the US withdrawal, even as Iran openly violates it without formally withdrawing itself.

Not saying I disagree with your sentiment about the Iranian government, but we have to be at least reasonably consistent in our application of sanctions for human rights abuses.

This isn't a Trump failure. This is exactly what Trump wanted to have happen when he withdrew from the agreement. It lets him play his brand of fear politics while delegitimizing our allies in Europe. He'd do the same with North Korea if Kim wasn't so good at schmoozing him and giving him photo ops.

While I respect your consistency, Iran has already been heavily sanctioned (not to mention the U.S. playing a role in engineering a destructive was that claimed hundreds of thousands of innocent Iranian lives in the 80s), and it didn't really work. Just like decades of sanctions, plots and isolation didn't erode the regime in Cuba. Engaging Iran would have better chances at changing things, because all that's been done only strengthened their hardline elements, thus adding new fuel to their genuinely disturbing rhetoric and oppressive ways. Yes, it does sound like dropping the human rights element, but it actually have better chances of advancing it, instead of old dysfunctional policy.
